Kapil Sharma is a stand-up comedian, television host, actor, and producer better known for hosting The Kapil Sharma Show. He initially hosted the comedy shows Comedy Nights with Kapil and Family Time with Kapil on television.

Kapil Sharma was named the most popular Indian television personality in April 2016 by Ormax Media. In 2016, and 2017, Forbes India ranked him 11th and 18th on their Celebrity 100 list, respectively. In 2013, he was named CNN-IBN Indian of the Year in the entertainment category, and in 2015, he was ranked third in The Economic Times’ Most Admired Indian Personality List. Sharma was appointed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014 for the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, which aims to raise public awareness about cleanliness and other hygiene-related social issues. President Pranab Mukherjee invited him to the Rashtrapati Bhavan in September 2015 to recognize his contribution to the mission through his show.

Kapil Sharma was born as Kapil Punj in Amritsar, Punjab, India. His father’s name is Jeetendra Kumar Punj. He worked as a head constable for the Punjab Police. His mother’s name is Janak Rani, is a housewife. In 1997, his dad was diagnosed with cancer, and he died in 2004 at AIIMS in Delhi. He attended Shri Ram Ashram Senior Secondary School in Amritsar as well as Hindu College in Amritsar. He is among the notable alumni of Apeejay College of Fine Arts in Jalandhar. Sharma has an older brother, Ashok Kumar Sharma, who works as a police constable, and a younger sister, Pooja Pawan Devgan.

On December 12, 2018, Sharma married Ginni Chatrath in Jalandhar. The couple is blessed with a son and a daughter.

Career:

Kapil Sharma rose to prominence after winning the comedy reality show The Great Indian Laughter Challenge in 2007, for which he received a cash prize of INR 10 lakh. He previously appeared on the MH One channel in the Punjabi show Hasde Hasaande Ravo. Sharma has mentioned that he moved to Mumbai to pursue a career as a singer.

He appeared on Sony’s Comedy Circus and won six seasons of the show. He also hosted Season 6 of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, a dance reality show, and Chhote Miyan, a comedy show. In 2008, Sharma appeared as a contestant on the show Ustaadon Ka Ustaad. Under his banner K9 Productions, Kapil debuted his own show, Comedy Nights with Kapil, on Colors in 2013.

Sharma was honored with the Indian of the Year award in the entertainment category by veteran actor Amol Palekar at the CNN-IBN Indian of the Year awards in 2013. During the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, he was designated as the Delhi Election Commission’s Brand Ambassador.

Sharma and Karan Johar co-hosted the 60th Filmfare Awards in 2015. He hosted the fourth season of Celebrity Cricket League in 2014. He appeared as a celebrity guest on The Anupam Kher Show and on the first episode of the eighth season of the Indian television game show Kaun Banega Crorepati. In 2017, he also appeared as a guest on Koffee With Karan.

Sharma made his Debut film as the male lead in Abbas Mustan’s romantic comedy Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon, opposite four actresses Elli Avram, Manjari Phadnis, Simran Kaur Mundi, and Sai Lokur. The film was released on September 25, 2015, to mixed reviews from critics, but it achieved a record-breaking opening day for a debut.

Following the cancellation of Comedy Nights with Kapil, Sharma signed a deal with Sony TV for a new show called The Kapil Sharma Show. Its final episode aired on January 24, 2016. Following that, he began working for Sony Entertainment Television on The Kapil Sharma Show as part of his K9 Productions. The Kapil Sharma Show premiered on April 23, 2016, and received a positive response from viewers.

Sharma was chosen by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, for which he campaigned and regularly promotes on his show.
