KBC debuted on 3 July 2000 and hosted the first appearance of Amitabh Bachchan on Indian television. Initially, KBC gave the opportunity for contestants to win 1 crore (ten million) Indian rupees. KBC’s falling ratings opened the way for the program to be reformatted immediately as Junior KBC with children as contestants, which began broadcasting on 6 May 2001. On 31 December 2001, the season concluded. In its premiere season, the show was well-received.

Sony TV posted a brief social media video featuring Bachchan on 2 May 2020, revealing that the season 12 audition process would run from 9 to 23 May. Filming and broadcasting were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. On 7 September, filming began. On his official Twitter account, Bachchan posted the first look of the revamped set.

The premiere of Season 12 was broadcast on September 28, with the tagline “jo bhi ho, har setback ka jawab comeback se do” The first contestant of the season was Aarti Jagtap, a resident of Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.

Filming happened without a studio audience because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Consequently, the Audience Poll lifeline was replaced, except via video call, by the Video a Friend lifeline, which is close to the Phone a Friend lifeline.

The first contestant to win 25 lakhs in KBC 12 was Mrinalini Dubey. A contestant (Runa Saha from Kolkata) came to the hot seat for the first time in KBC history without playing Fastest Finger First, since no other contestants were left.

Similar to the original series in the United Kingdom, a certification quiz was conducted by members of the public at the beginning of each series at different points in the year. Applicants should send a premium-rate SMS to a given number and respond by answering a question. Before being randomly picked from a pool of other hopeful entrants, contestants must perform a series of interviews and appear on the set in Fastest Finger First. Contestants must be residents and citizens of India and must be at least 18 years of age to be eligible.

They will join the host in the “Hot Seat” after choosing the Fastest Finger First winner to begin answering a set of multiple-choice questions on their way to win the top cash prize, as illustrated in the table below. The contestant is free to walk away from the game with their winnings along the way, but if they got a question wrong, they would walk away with none until they answered a landmark question correctly (highlighted in yellow), which would ensure any winnings.

Like his counterparts, the contestant has a set of lifelines open for them to use to support them along the way. What lifelines were available depends on the format being used. In addition, the contestant would have to answer certain questions within a certain period of time beginning in season 4. Contestants were allocated 30 seconds to respond to the first threshold question, including (in 2017, this was increased to 45 seconds). The following question was allocated 60 seconds to give its “final answer” up to and including the next threshold candidates. Questions were untimed for the final series of questions (the question following the second threshold). The countdown stopped briefly before it was fixed by using a lifeline. The timer will reset from the base value of the question if the contestant used Flip The Question.

There was a reduction in the overall number of questions available in the game. When the number of questions increased, so did the overall money available for the prize. KBC launched a Jackpot Question in 2017. The contestants were not permitted to use any of the remaining lifelines for the Jackpot Question.

The contestants had to pick a threshold or “Padao” themselves in seasons 5 and 6. On the tree, they were able to pick any one query and assign it as a threshold number. That ensures that they were promised that amount of cash winnings if they passed the threshold. Before the Padao is hit, having a question incorrect will result in zero winnings.
