Kelly Macdonald is a Scottish actress who has appeared in Trainspotting (1996), Gosford Park (2001), Intermission (2003), Nanny McPhee (2005), Boardwalk Empire (2010–2014), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (2011), Brave (2012), the Black Mirror episode “Hated in the Nation” (2016), and Line of Duty, Season 6. Kelly Macdonald was born in Glasgow and raised in Newton Mearns, Scotland. Following her parents’ divorce, she was raised by her mother, a garment industry sales executive, along with her brother David. From 1989 to 1993, Macdonald attended Eastwood High School.

Macdonald married musician Dougie Payne, bassist of soft rock band Travis, in August 2003. They have two sons and returned to Glasgow in 2014 after living in London and New York City. They divorced in 2017.

Macdonald’s career started in Glasgow, where she was working as a barmaid. She saw a flyer advertising an open casting call for Trainspotting and decided to try out, eventually landing the role of Diane, the underage seductress to Ewan McGregor’s Renton. Other roles include Mary O’Neary in Two Family House and an actress in Finding Neverland as Peter Pan. She starred as an aristocrat’s maid in Robert Altman’s British period piece Gosford Park, and as Deirdre in Intermission (2003).

On the radio, she played Mary in the 1999 BBC radio drama Lifehouse, which was based on Pete Townshend’s abandoned rock opera, some of which were released on The Who’s album Who’s Next. Her most prominent roles on television have been in two BBC dramas, the Paul Abbott serial State of Play (2003) and the one-off Richard Curtis piece The Girl in the Café (2005). Both films were directed by David Yates and featured Bill Nighy. In 2006, she was appointed for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Miniseries or Television Film for her performance in The Girl in the Café, and she won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie.

Macdonald first appeared as the scullery maid Evangeline in the 2005 film Nanny McPhee, and she has since had supporting roles in A Cock and Bull Story (2006) and the Coen brothers Academy Award-winning No Country for Old Men (2007), for which she was selected for a BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. It was reported that she had to fight her agent in order to be considered for the role, but Macdonald denied the claim in 2017.
