Kang Hyung-gu is better known as Kino. He is a singer, songwriter, rapper, composer, and dancer from South Korea. He is known primarily as a member of the Cube Entertainment boy band Pentagon, which debuted in 2016. Under the alias Knnovation, he releases solo music on SoundCloud.


Kino Biography:

Kino was born on January 27, 1998, in Seongnam, South Korea. He has a younger sister. He spent three months as a child in the Philippines. He is fluent in Korean, Japanese, and English. He graduated from Hanlim School of Performing Arts in 2017 and was accepted as a practical dance major at Sejong University through non-scheduled admission. He is referred to as the group’s dance master. Park Ji-min of 15&, Woodz of UNIQ, Vernon of Seventeen, Nathan, and Hoho are his friends. They form a project group called M.O.L.A. (Make Our Lives Awesome). Before joining his present agency, Cube Entertainment, Kino was a Power Vocal and JYP Entertainment trainee. On his SoundCloud page, “Knnovation,” he also regularly uploads demos for other self-produced tracks.

Career:

Prior to his K-pop debut, he was a member of the dance group Urban Boyz. He appeared in G.NA’s MV and promotional activities for ‘Secret.’ He also made an appearance in Rain’s “Rain Effect.”

In 2016, he took part in the reality show Pentagon Maker.

Cube Entertainment confirmed Kino’s debut with Pentagon with the release of “Young.” He assisted in the creation of the choreography for their debut single, “Gorilla.” Kino appears in the drama Hello, My Twenties! 2 as a member of Asgard with his bandmates.

In 2017, he assisted in the choreography of the Pentagon songs “Like This” for the EP Demo 01 and “Runaway” for Demo 02, the latter with Jay Black. He also created the Demo 02 song “Violet,” which has a Korean and Japanese music video and later became the title track for their second Japanese mini-album, Violet.

Kino posted a video of himself doing the “In My Feelings Challenge” on July 14, 2018. Because she was the first celebrity in South Korea to participate in the challenge, the video went viral, and the challenge obtained popularity in the country. On July 17, he was cast as the MC for Bus King, a program in which musicians surprise bus passengers by performing a series of songs, alongside Gongchan of B1A4 and Yoo Seung-Woo. M.O.L.A, a musical group comprised of Kino, Park Ji-min of 15&, Woodz of UNIQ, Vernon of Seventeen, and Nathan, has released an unofficial song titled “Chillin” on SoundCloud. In September, he appeared alongside M.O.L.A member of Woodz and Nathan on Park Ji-min’s “PUTP” (Pick Up The Phone). Jimin’s second mini-album, jiminxjamie, featured the song. Later that month, he wrote “Crossroad” for Jung Dong-first ha’s full-length album of the same name. Kino appeared on labelmate A Train To Autumn’s debut track “That Season You Were In” and KRIZ’s “Bad” featuring Woodz in November. He wrote Jisu’s debut single “Dear Dawn” in late December.


He co-wrote the lyrics for M.FECT’s “Designer” in January 2019. On March 11, he contributed to Wooseok’s debut extended play 9801 by writing and composing “Always Difficult Always Beautiful.” The song was inspired by the season three episode “San Junipero” of the British anthology series Black Mirror. That same month, Pentagon held a comeback show for their eight-song mini-album Genie: us, which featured three songs produced by Kino: “Lost Paradise,” “Spring Snow,” and “Round 1.”

Kino took part in all scheduled activities, with the exception of performances, which he missed due to an ankle injury he sustained in January. Pentagon kept promoting “Spring Snow,” and he was able to take part in the promotions for a week. He co-wrote, co-produced, and appeared on KRIZ’s “1 Sided Love” on April 30. On September 1, he appeared on KRIZ’s song “Hard to Love.”

Kino premiered as a radio host on Casper Radio’s radio show, Kino’s KiSingBooth, in 2020. Kino co-wrote “Die for You” with Nathan for Pentagon’s first studio album Universe: The Black Hall, which was released on February 12. He was inspired to write the song by Harley Quinn from the film Suicide Squad. In June 2020, he co-produced “Shine Bright” by Lee Soo-young’s Bright,” the fourth OST for the comedy-drama Kkondae Intern. Kino released the Pentagon song “Twenty-Twenty” on September 16 as the first OST for the web drama Twenty-Twenty. A month later, he and bandmate Hongseok appeared in the drama.

Pentagon released their tenth mini album We:th on October 12th, for which he produced two songs: “Beautiful Goodbye” and “Paradise.” Kino revealed that he created the online album art cover as a gift for Pentagon leader Hui. This is Kino’s “first drawing.” He also created the teaser image and the album’s inside pages. Kino appeared as the first artist on Unordinary Sunday’s project album in November, with the song “Poison ( ).” The jazz song expresses a person’s conflicted feelings about leaving behind a toxic person with whom he is still in love.

Kino co-hosted the DIVE Studios podcast Unboxing with Astro’s Jinjin in March 2021.
