Dixit has been involved in charity initiatives in addition to performing in films. She has been a major celebrity ambassador for businesses and products since 2014, working with UNICEF to advocate for children’s rights and avoid child labour. She performs in concert tours and stage productions, serves as a talent judge on dance reality shows, runs an online dance academy, and is the co-founder of RnM Moving Pictures, a production firm. The film was a commercial failure upon its premiere, although critics praised Dixit’s performance. “Madhuri impresses in her portrayal as a young bride who acquits herself well as the naive rural girl who does not comprehend what marriage actually involves,” Gomolo’s Aakash Barvalia remarked. Her only film in 1985, Awara Baap, was a box office disappointment. She was the cover girl of Filmfare in April 1986, and a monochrome portrait of hers, shot by Gautam Rajadhyaksha, was featured on the cover of the then popular magazine Debonair.

In 1984, Dixit made her film debut in Rajshri Productions’ drama Abodh, in which she starred alongside Bengali actor Tapas Paul. She was the cover girl of Filmfare in April 1986, and a monochrome portrait of hers, shot by Gautam Rajadhyaksha, was featured on the cover of the then popular magazine Debonair.

Dixit featured in nine films in 1990. Five of these were commercially unsuccessful: Maha-Sangram, Deewana Mujh Sa Nahin, Jeevan Ek Sanghursh, Sailaab, and Jamai Raja. Rakesh Roshan’s action comedy Kishen Kanhaiya was her next film that year (alongside Anil Kapoor and Shilpa Shirodkar). It relates the storey of twin brothers who were separated at birth and later reunited as teenagers. In India, it was the fourth highest-grossing picture of the year. Dixit then starred as a strong-willed woman in the box-office flop Izzatdaar.

Indra Kumar’s romance drama Dil, in which she co-starred with Aamir Khan, earned her first Filmfare Best Actress Award for her portrayal of Madhu, a privileged and snobbish girl who falls in love with a poorer boy. It ended up becoming the year’s highest-grossing film. Her performance was lauded by Rediff.com, who said: “…she demonstrated her versatility as a performer. She exhaled flames like a defiant lover challenging her family or a despondent estranged wife yearning to be with her ailing better half.” Dixit’s final film of the year was the action movie Thanedaar, which she co-starred in with Dutt and was a commercial success.

She then acted alongside Nana Patekar and Mukul Dev in the N.Chandra-directed drama Wajood (1998). She portrayed Apoorva, a wealthy woman who is misunderstood by Patekar’s Malhar. Rediff’s Suparn Verma had this to say: “…However, she proves that even a minor role cannot suffocate her, as she animates the screen in a way that only she can. The fact that Nana, Madhuri, and Chandra are all in one film is quite remarkable.” Her next and final film in 1999 was the romantic comedy Aarzoo, in which she starred alongside Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan. The picture was a commercial failure when it was released.

Dixit made her Marathi film debut in 2018 with the comedy-drama Bucket List. She portrayed Madhura Sane, a middle-aged housewife who takes it upon herself to fulfil her deceased adolescent heart donor’s bucket list. “Madhuri owns the film and sails through it with flying colours,” observed Mihir Bhanage of The Times of India, praising Dixit’s performance. “Madhuri Dixit’s long-awaited debut in Marathi film is a comfort watch, even if a touch predictable and mushy,” Mumbai Mirror’s Kunal Guha said.
