Mark Zuckerberg, full name Mark Elliot Zuckerberg (born May 14, 1984 in White Plains, New York, United States), is an American computer programmer who cofounded and served as CEO of Facebook, a social networking Web site, from 2004 until 2012.

Zuckerberg enrolled at Harvard University in 2002 after graduating from Phillips Exeter Academy. On February 4, 2004, he founded thefacebook.com (renamed Facebook in 2005), a directory in which fellow Harvard students could submit their own information and images using a template he created. Within two weeks, more than half of the student population had enrolled. Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes, two of Zuckerberg’s roommates, assisted him in expanding the site’s functionality and making it accessible to other schools around the country. Facebook soon gained popularity as a result of the ability for registered users to build profiles, upload images and other material, and communicate with friends. However, it distinguished itself from other social networking sites by emphasising genuine identities (and e-mail addresses) or “trusted connections.” Additionally, it placed a premium on networking, with information being distributed not only to each individual’s network of friends, but also to their friends’ networks—what Zuckerberg dubbed the “social graph.”

The trio relocated to Palo Alto, California, in the summer of 2004, when Zuckerberg convinced venture capitalist Peter Thiel to provide early funding. Zuckerberg left Harvard to focus on the developing company, which he eventually became CEO and president. Facebook received its first significant influx of venture financing ($12.7 million) in May 2005. Four months later, Facebook allowed high-school pupils to register. Meanwhile, foreign colleges and universities began signing up as well, and by September 2006, anyone with an e-mail address could join a regional network based on their location. Around that time, Zuckerberg rejected down a $1 billion buyout bid from Yahoo!, but in 2007, Microsoft paid $240 million for a 1.6 percent investment in Facebook; two years later, Digital Sky Technologies paid $200 million for a 1.96 percent stake. Zuckerberg’s new net worth was estimated to be over $1.5 billion in 2008. Zuckerberg’s net worth was estimated at more than $19 billion following Facebook’s 2012 initial public offering (IPO). A virtual community is a collection of people who may or may not meet in person but communicate words and ideas via the medium of digital networks.

The term “virtual community” first appeared in a 1986 article by Gene Youngblood about Electronic Cafe (1984), an art piece by Kit Galloway and Sherrie Rabinowitz that connected five restaurants in Los Angeles and an art museum via a live video link. The word acquired prominence following Howard Rheingold’s 1987 piece for The Whole Earth Review. Rheingold elaborated on his paper in The Virtual Community (1993) by offering the following definition: Rheingold’s paper and book are regarded as seminal contributions in the field of cyberculture studies. Numerous subsequent commentators have disputed Rheingold’s use of the term “community” and the terminology he used to describe the technosocial phenomenon of persistent computer-mediated relationships; the terms “social media” and “participatory media” are also used to refer to a very broad range of human social activity online.

The first predictions of communities of computer-connected individuals and groups were made in 1968 by J.C.R. Licklider and Robert Taylor, who as research administrators for the United States Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) initiated the research that resulted in the creation of the first such community, the ARPANET, which served as the forerunner to the Internet. According to Licklider and Taylor,

Even before the ARPANET was established in the early 1960s, the PLATO computer-based education system incorporated facilities for online community interaction. Douglas Engelbart, who operated the ARPANET’s first Network Information Center, had established a “bootstrapping community” at Stanford University’s Stanford Research Institute (SRI) through the usage of his pioneering oNLine System (NLS) prior to the ARPANET’s introduction.
