War Horse, The Lion Butterfly, and Private Peaceful were all written by Michael Morpurgo, a well-known contemporary author. During his time as a teacher, he told stories to young students and had a lightbulb moment of insight into his true calling: to be a writer. The prolific writer started out writing young adult novels before moving on to other genres. His works have been well received by fans and critics alike.

He was a friend of Ted Hughes, a well-known poet, and with Hughes’ help, he pursued a writing career. Children’s Laureate was created by Hughes and Morpurgo, two authors well-known for their work with children. For the third time in a row, a British author, Michael Morpurgo, received this prestigious award. Morpurgo loves the countryside and wants city kids who don’t have access to it to get a taste of it. ‘Farms for City Children’ was the charitable organization he and his wife Clara founded to help them achieve their goal. There has been an increase in the number of children associated with this charity every year since its inception. Both his writings and these farms continue to be educational and entertaining to readers all over the world.

He was born on October 5th, 1943, in St. Albans, Hertfordshire, the son of actor-director Tony Van Bridge and actress Kippe Cammaerts. But he didn’t learn about his biological father for many years. Because of Tony’s military service, Kippe married Jack Morpurgo while he was away, and Michael grew up believing Jack was his father and using his surname.

He has an older brother named Pieter Morpurgo, as well as half-siblings David Cheyne, Shona Bridge, and Peter Cheyne. Pieter Morpurgo is the oldest.

He was educated at numerous colleges and universities throughout the country, including those in Canterbury, Sussex, and London. Before joining the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, he went to the “King’s School”.

He and his mother saw the Tony Bridge-led film ‘Great Expectations’ in 1962. Michael found out about his father at this point. Upon graduating from the University of London, he became a primary school teacher and began telling stories to his students in front of a classroom audience. This exercise in story-telling helped him discover the storyteller hidden within him, and as a result, he began his career as an author.

The poet Ted Hughes was an influence on him as a writer, as well as a friend, philosopher, and guide. Paul Gallico, Ernest Hemingway, and Seán Rafferty were also influences on his writing. For the first time in his career, he released a book, titled It Never Rained: Five Stories, back in 1974. Soon after that, many more were written such as the compilation of living poets, “Living Poets,” “Long Way from Home,” “Thatcher Jones,” and “The Story-Teller” (compiler with Graham Barrett).

The writer and his wife Clare founded ‘Farms for City Children’ as a charity in 1976. It was the goal of this non-profit to introduce city children to the lush surroundings of rural farms and to teach them farm chores.

As a result of the organization’s expansion, it now has three additional farms in Wales, Gloucestershire, and Devon. Every year, more children come to live on the farm. With his mentor Ted Hughes, he helped found the Children’s Laureate.

The years 1977-1979 saw him publish an impressive number of books, including “Friend or Foe,” “Do All You Dare,” “What Shall We Do with It?” (with Ted Hughes), “Love at First Sight,” “That’s How,” “The Day I Took the Bull By the Horn,” and “The Ghost-Fish.” He was particularly prolific during this time period.

Actor/writer best known for War Horse (2011), Toto: The Dog-Gone Amazing Story of Oz (2007), and The Kites Are Flying! (2001): He’s married to Claire Morpurgo MBE, who’s an actress in her own right. They’re the parents of three kids. Tony Van Bridge’s natural son and Peter Bridge’s nephew (died in action 1941).

From 2003 to 2005, he served as the Children’s Laureate Author. In 2005, he was named Author of the Year by the Booksellers Association. In 2004, he was named a “Chevalier Des Arts et Des Lettres” by the French government. He received this honor in 2004. Honorary Doctorates were bestowed upon him by the universities of Plymouth, Exeter, and Hertfordshire. He was a fellow at the prestigious London, United Kingdom, institution of higher learning known as Kings College.

As a result of his contributions to children’s literature, he received the honorary title of OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2006. This production of “The War Horse,” by the National Theatre of Great Britain and Handspring Puppet Company, won the 2012 Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award for Production.

Los Angeles Stage Alliance’s Ovation for Best Presented Production went to “The War Horse,” a National Theatre of Great Britain production in collaboration with Handspring Puppet Company at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
