Mohan Bhagwat Biography:

Mohan Madhukar Bhagwat was born on 11 September 1950 in the Marathi family of Chandrapur, then the Bombay State of India. He belongs to a family of RSS activists.   His father’s name was Madhukar Rao Bhagwat. He was a Karyavah (Secretary) for the Chandrapur zone and later a Pracharak (Provincial Promoter) for Gujarat. His mother’s name was Malati. She was a member of the Women’s Wing RSS.

Bhagwat finished his schooling at ‘Lokmanya Tilak Vidyalaya’ and then the first year of his BSc at Janata College in Chandrapur. He graduated in Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry from the Government Veterinary College in Nagpur. He dropped out of his postgraduate degree in veterinary sciences and became a pracharak of the RSS towards the end of 1975.

Career:

Association with RSS:

Bhagwat became the Pracharak of Akola in Maharashtra in 1977 after working underground during the emergency and grew within the organization responsible for the Nagpur and Vidarbha regions.

He became ‘Akhil Bharatiya Sharirik Pramukh’ for India from 1991 to 1999. He was further promoted as ‘Akhil Bharatiya Pracharak Pramukh’ (in-charge of RSS volunteers working full-time for India).

In 2000, when Rajendra Singh and H. V. Sheshadri decided to step down as RSS Chief and general secretary respectively due to poor health, K. S. Sudarshan was nominated as the new chief and Bhagwat became ‘Sarkaryavah,’ (general secretary).

Bhagwat was elected as the Sarsanghchalak (Chief Executive) of the RSS on 21 March 2009. He is one of the youngest representatives to lead Swayamsevak Sangh after K. B. Hedgewar, M. S. Golwalkar.

In June 2015, the Government of India ordered the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to provide Bhagwat with round-the-clock protection due to the high perception of threats from different Islamic terrorist groups. At Z+ VVIP security cover, Bhagwat is one of today’s most secured Indians.

In 2017, Bhagwat became the first RSS Chief to be officially welcomed by then President Pranab Mukherjee to the Rashtrapati Bhawan. In September 2018, Mohan Bhagwat presided over a three-day session at Vigyan Bhawan in Delhi to reach out to the wider public. That time, he said that RSS has dismissed some parts of M. S. Golwalkar’s “Bunch of Thoughts” which are no longer relevant to the present circumstances.

Opinion:

In November 2016, while addressing ‘Prerna Shibir’ on the 80th anniversary of Rashtra Sevika Samiti, the women’s wing of the RSS, Mohan Bhagwat said that Homo sapiens had eaten in the space of other species of the genus Homo, such as Homo floresiensis and Neanderthals, in the past, but even Homo sapiens could be extinct in the next thousand years.

Bhagwat was cited in September 2017 as saying, “Hinduism was the only true religion in the world and other religions were just faiths which emerged from Hinduism.”

In his speech in Dussehra in 2020, he appreciated the verdict of Ram Janmabhoomi and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). He expressed disapproval of those who “misled our Muslim brothers by spreading a false notion” and regretted the damage caused to “communal harmony” by the agitators, evoking the response of Muslim leader Asaduddin Owaisi, who said that Muslims were not children to be misled.

Awards and Recognition:

In 2017, Mohan Bhagwat was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science (DSc) degree by the State University of Animal and Fishery Sciences during its convening ceremony in Nagpur.

Controversies:

1. In January 2013, Bhagwat’s reply sparked a controversy when he said, “women should be just housewives and husbands should be the breadwinners”.

2. In August 2016, Bhagwat’s statement on the rapid increase of the Hindu population provoked controversy when he said, “Which law says that the population of Hindus should not rise? There is nothing like that. What is stopping them when the population of others is rising? The issue is not related to the system. It is because the social environment is like this”.

3. Bhagwat once said, “People of America are called American, people of Germany called German, people of England are called English so people of India must be Hindu, Everyone in India is Hindu.”

4. Mohan once mentioned on Mother Teresa’s service that conversion to Christianity was the main reason for Teresa’s service in India.
