After Mamata Banerjee decided to resign as the Minister of Railways to become Chief Minister of West Bengal, Roy was handed over additional charges to the Ministry of Railways after Mamata expressed her wish that her party would retain the Ministry of Railways and privately suggested Roy to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

He resigned from the Trinamool Congress on 25 September 2017; he was later suspended for six years as a party for anti-party activities. He also resigned as a member of the Rajya Sabha on 11 October 2017.

Political Career:

Roy began his political career as the leader of the Youth Congress and became close to Mamata Banerjee, who was also a member of the Youth Congress.

Roy was a founder member of the All India Trinamool Congress, formed in January 1998 as a breakaway faction of the Indian National Congress led by Mamata Banerjee. He soon became a party’s face in New Delhi and became Secretary-General in 2006.

In the 2001 election of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, he was a TMC candidate from the Jagatdal electoral district and came in second with 56,741.

This caused a lot of displeasure among the political circles, and on 12 July 2011, he was removed from the Railways portfolio in the latest cabinet reshuffle.

After Dinesh resigned, Mukul became Indian Railway Minister, and he removed too much criticism from the fare hike introduced by former Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi. An application for the establishment of a new political party called the Nationalist Trinamool Congress Party was submitted to the Election Commission and Mukul Assistant Amitabha Majumdar was appointed as President. The party’s headquarters are located in Dinhata, North Bengal.

Roy and Mamata had a decline in 2015 when his name came up in the Saradha scam as well as in the Narada sting operation in which TMC leaders were involved.

Roy was expelled from the party for six years when senior BJP leaders such as Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and BJP Secretary-General Kailash Vijayvargiya met. He resigned from the Trinamool Congress on 25 September 2017. Roy also resigned from membership of Rajya Sabha on 11 October 2017.
