Nagraj Manjule is an Indian film director, actor, producer, scriptwriter, poet, screenwriter, and filmmaker who works in the Marathi film industry. He is best known for his Marathi film Sairat and the short film Pistulya, for which he won the National Film Award for Non-Feature Film. He is a well-known figure in the Indian film industry and is regarded as a prominent filmmaker and screenwriter. His contributions to Marathi cinema have been widely recognized and appreciated by critics and audiences alike. He is known for his distinctive style of filmmaking that is deeply rooted in the cultural and social milieu of Maharashtra.

Nagraj Manjule was born in Jeur, Karmala Taluka, Solapur, on August 24, 1977. Fandry, Sairat and Pistulya are his three most well-known Marathi films. Manjule grew up in the Maharashtra village of Jeur, in the Solapur district. He is a member of the Waddar clan, a Dravidian tribe that is considered low caste.

In 2013, Nagraj Manjule marked his directorial debut with the Marathi film ‘Fandry,’ which received widespread critical acclaim and was showered with awards and accolades. The film’s poignant portrayal of caste-based discrimination and its impact on the lives of the marginalized communities struck a chord with the audiences, and it was lauded for its powerful storytelling, evocative visuals, and brilliant performances. The film won several awards, including the Grand Jury Prize at the Mumbai Film Festival, cementing Manjule’s position as a promising talent in the Marathi film industry.

He received a master’s degree in communication studies from New Arts, Science, and Commerce College in Ahmednagar after receiving his M.A. in Marathi literature from the University of Pune.

Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, the emancipator of the oppressed and the founder of the Indian constitution, has heavily influenced Nagraj Manjule.

His experiences inspire Nagraj’s films as a Dalit growing up in rural Maharashtra. His films have concentrated on the plight of members of these groups, including racial segregation by high-caste communities and the economic struggles that result.

Pistulya, his first National Award-winning short film, is based on his “felt experience.” The film centers on a Dalit boy’s wish to attend school and his unwillingness to do so due to his family’s hardship and his community’s profound aversion to formal education.

Fandry, his first feature film was released in February 2014; the word “pig” in the Kaikadi language means “pig.” The film centers on the struggles of a Kaikadi family living in poverty on the outskirts of a village where members of savanna groups rule the social and economic system. Fandry was well-received by critics.

Nagraj Manjule is a multifaceted artist who has made significant contributions to various forms of art, including cinema, poetry, and acting. In addition to his work as a director and screenwriter, he has also acted in several Marathi films and TV shows, showcasing his versatility and range as an actor. His performances have been widely appreciated by the audiences and have earned him critical acclaim for his nuanced portrayal of complex characters.

The 66th Berlin International Film Festival premiered Manjule’s second film, Sairat. Like Fandry and Pistulya, it concerns caste discrimination and honor killings, which are still common in parts of India. Sairat also attempts to discuss the status of women in society, with Archie (Archana Patil), the film’s female lead, receiving both critical and public acclaim. The Marathi film Sairat is reportedly the highest-grossing of all time. Jhund, starring Amitabh Bachchan, marks Manjule’s directorial debut in Hindi cinema.

In recognition of his immense contributions to Indian cinema and his expertise in the field, Nagraj Manjule was appointed as the chairman of the jury for the 66th National Film Awards in 2019. As the head of the jury, he played a pivotal role in recognizing and awarding the best talent in Indian cinema, showcasing his passion and commitment to the industry. His appointment was widely hailed by the film fraternity and was seen as a fitting tribute to his exceptional talent and contribution to the field of cinema.

Manjule joined Amitabh Bachchan’s show, Marathi Kaun Banega Crorepati, as a host in 2019.
