Om Birla is the 18th and incumbent Speaker of the Lok Sabha, is an Indian politician. He is a Member of Parliament for Rajasthan’s Kota-Bundi constituency. He was elected to the Rajasthan assembly three times before entering parliament. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Om Birla was born in a Marwari Maheshwari family on November 23, 1962, to Shrikrishna Birla and Late Shakuntala Devi. He earned his master’s degree in commerce from Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati University in Ajmer and Govt. Commerce College in Kota.
Om Birla secured his first assembly election in 2003, when he ran for Kota South. By a majority of 10,101 votes, he beat Congresswoman Shanti Dhariwal. In the 2008 assembly elections, he successfully retained his seat against his closest opponent, Congress’ Ram Kishan Verma, by a safe margin of 24,300 votes.
He secured his third assembly election against Pankaj Mehta (Congress) by nearly 50,000 votes in 2013, before becoming a Member of Parliament. He was the Parliamentary Secretary (MoS rank) in the Rajasthan Government from 2003 to 2008.
Om Birla was elected to the 16th and 17th Lok Sabha as the BJP candidate for the Kota constituency. He served on the Standing Committee on Electricity and the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment in the 16th Lok Sabha.
Many citizens, including members of the Treasury Bench, were shocked by the appointment of Om Birla, a Kota-Bundi MP, for the position of Lok Sabha speaker.
Om Birla was elected Speaker of the 17th Lok Sabha on June 19, 2019, following Prime Minister Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party’s motion for representation. The Congress and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam parties have filed notices against Birla, urging him to be neutral as the Lower House’s presiding officer.
The Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha must come from the Opposition benches, according to Indian parliamentary tradition. The Lok Sabha is approaching two years with an empty Deputy Speaker seat as of March 2021, a first in the Republic’s history.
