Pinarayi Vijayan was born on May 24, 1945, in Pinarayi village, Malabar district, Madras Presidency. Just three of his fourteen siblings. He worked as a handloom weaver for a year after graduation from high school before enrolling in the Government Brennen College in Thalassery for a Pre-university course. He went on to receive a B.A. in Economics from the same institution.

Pinarayi Vijayan began her political career as a member of the student union at Government Brennen College in Thalassery. In 1964, he became a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). Vijayan joined the Kerala Students Federation (KSF), which later became the Students Federation of India, as Kannur district secretary (SFI). He rose through the ranks of KSF to become state secretary and then state president. The Kerala State Youth Federation (KSYF), which later became the Democratic Youth Federation of India, was his next stop (DYFI). He was elected as the state committee’s president. Pinarayi Vijayan was imprisoned for one and a half years during that time, when communists in Kerala were organizing political activities from various hideouts.
He went on to become the president of the Kerala state co-operative bank. He was detained and tortured by police after the emergency. When M.V. Raghavan left the CPI(M) over the ‘alternative paper’ row, he became the Kannur district secretary. He rose through the ranks of the State Secretariat in just three years. He was elected to the Assembly from Kuthuparamba in 1970, 1977, and 1991, Payyanur in 1996, and Dharmadom in 2016. From 1996 to 1998, he was the Minister of Electric Power and Co-operatives in the E.K. Nayanar administration. Following the death of the incumbent Chadayan Govindan, he was appointed state secretary of the CPI(M) in 1998. In 2002, he was elected to the CPI(M) Politburo.
For their public remarks on each other, the CPI(M) suspended Pinarayi Vijayan and V. S. Achuthanandan from the Politburo on May 26, 2007. Later, Pinarayi was re-instated in the Politburo.
Pinarayi Vijayan was elected Chief Minister of Kerala in the 2016 Legislative Assembly election. On May 25, 2016, he swore in his Left Democratic Front ministry, which comprised a 19-member cabinet. Vijayan was in charge of the Departments of Home Affairs and Vigilance, as well as the other portfolios usually held by Chief Ministers but not listed elsewhere. From the Dharmadom constituency, he was chosen.
The Pinarayi Vijayan ministry launched a yearly Progress Report, the first of its kind in India, to mark responsibility and openness of the ruling front. The paper included an assessment of the ministry’s results in relation to the pledges made in the Left Democratic Front’s election manifesto. By December 2020, his ministry would have kept 570 of the 600 poll pledges made in the election manifesto.
His ministry launched four missions to help develop Nava Keralam, a project that is supposed to change Kerala in the long run. LIFE Mission is one of the missions. It is an initiative that aims to address the challenges of all types of individuals, including the homeless and landless, as well as those who have not been able to finish their house building since beginning it. It has built over 2 lakh houses for the homeless.
The Ardram Mission sought to completely reform the public health system, make it more user-friendly, accessible for the vulnerable, and capable of providing comprehensive state-of-the-art infrastructure. It made super specialty services available to district and taluk hospitals, which were previously only available at medical colleges.
The Haritha Keralam Mission was a multi-pronged effort to clean up and eliminate sewage from all of Kerala’s water bodies, including wetlands, rivers, reservoirs, and streams. The mission was a participatory program that included solid waste collection, waste water removal, and initiatives to expand the area of land under agriculture, and it was modeled after literacy missions, democratic decentralization, and people’s preparation.
The Kerala Education Mission proposed comprehensive educational improvements, including the upgrade of 1000 government schools to international standards in the first step and a gradual increase in educational facilities. Following the completion of the ‘hi-tech classroom and hi-tech lab’ ventures in government-owned colleges, Kerala became the first entirely interactive state in the world in the field of public education.
