Francis, often known as Francis I, is the Bishop of Rome and the Roman Catholic Church’s leader (2013–). He was born on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was the Western Hemisphere’s first pope, as well as the first from South America and the Jesuit order.
Bergoglio was born in Argentina, the son of Italian immigrants. He worked temporarily in the food-processing sector after graduating from high school to pursue a career as a chemical technologist, but felt called to the church. Later, Bergoglio claimed to have shielded a number of persons from police, even assisting some of them in fleeing the country. Two Jesuit priests who had worked in impoverished areas vanished in 1976; five months later, they were discovered alive but drugged in a field. Bergoglio’s part in the priests’ kidnapping and release sparked criticism years after the Dirty War. Some chastised Bergoglio for failing to protect the priests, accusing him of handing them over to the dictatorship. Others believed Bergoglio when he said he secretly intervened with the regime to obtain their release. Bergoglio was found not guilty of participation in the priests’ disappearance in a case filed against him. Bergoglio studied theology and worked as a seminary teacher and rector in Germany during the 1980s. He was made an auxiliary bishop of Buenos Aires in 1992.
In 1998, he was named archbishop of Buenos Aires (a position he held until his election to the papacy), and in 2001, he was made a cardinal. Bergoglio had a public reputation for humility during Argentina’s economic crisis, which began in the late 1990s and culminated in the fast depreciation of the country’s currency in 2002. He lived in a basic downtown apartment rather than the archbishop’s home and travelled by public transportation or on foot rather than in a hired vehicle. In encounters with government officials, he became an outspoken advocate for the underprivileged and an astute politician, expertly advocating the church’s viewpoint on social issues. Francis was assigned to a church at a fork in the road. Roman Catholics made up more than one-sixth of the world’s population in the early twenty-first century, with many of them in Latin America and Africa. However, crises, particularly the clerical sexual-abuse scandals that initially surfaced in the 1980s and 1990s, have harmed the church’s reputation, especially in the United States and Europe. Francis urged for spiritual renewal within the church and more attention to the condition of the poor in his first public addresses and in his first public mass, and he harshly attacked the forces that diverted the church from its ministry and put it at risk of becoming a “pitiful NGO.” He also went out to his political foes, inviting Fernández to his first formal papal address. However, by wearing a plain tunic rather than the more customary papal robes on that occasion, he enraged some traditionalists. Later in 2013, he took the unprecedented step of appointing an eight-cardinal council to assist him on church policy. Francis’ comments in that year that Christ had “redeemed all of us,” even non-Catholics, was widely misunderstood by the media as a message of outreach and kindness for atheists and agnostics, however a Vatican spokeswoman later said Francis had been misconstrued.
Francis quickly gained a reputation for making statements that suggested a similar tolerance to differing viewpoints on Catholic doctrine, particularly on social concerns and sexual ethics. Another problem for Francis’ presidency was the lasting impact of the church’s sexual-abuse scandal. During a December 2013 visit by Dutch bishops, Francis prayed for sexual abuse victims and urged the bishops to reach out to them and their families. The UN Commission on the Rights of the Child suggested that the Vatican adopt measures for mandatory reporting of suspected child abusers to law enforcement authorities in January 2014, but the Vatican declined on jurisdictional concerns later that year. Critics have complained that the Vatican has been sluggish to discipline and defrock priests who have been accused of paedophilia.
