Raghubar Das is a politician from India who served as the sixth Chief Minister of the state of Jharkhand. On December 28, 2014, he was appointed as Jharkhand’s sixth chief minister. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and has twice served as the president of the Jharkhand BJP. He is presently the National Vice President of the Bjp.
He worked for Tata Steel and was a member of the legislative assembly five times, representing Jamshedpur East from 1995 to 2019. During the state’s BJP-led government, he also served as Deputy Chief Minister and Urban Development Minister. He was imprisoned during an internal emergency. He is the state’s first chief minister to serve a full term.
Raghubar Das Biography:
Raghubar Das was born on 3 May 1955 in Bhalubasa, Jamshedpur. His father’s name is Chavan Ram, a steel company laborer, and his mother’s name is Sonbatti. He is of the Taili caste. He graduated from Bhalubasa Harijan High School and earned a B.Sc. from Jamshedpur Cooperative College. He also studied law at the same college, earning an LLB degree. Following his studies, he worked as a legal professional for Tata Steel. He used to work for the RSS.
Career:
Raghubar Das has been engaged in politics since he was in college. He was a member of the state’s Total Revolution movement, led by Jayprakash Narayan. He was arrested and jailed in Gaya, and he was imprisoned again during Indira Gandhi’s Emergency. Das later joined the Janata Party in 1977.
In 1980, he became a founding member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In 1980, he attended the BJP’s first National Committee meeting in Mumbai. He was selected as the commander of the Sitaramdera unit in Jamshedpur. Later, he served as Jamshedpur’s city chief secretary and vice president. After serving as BJP secretary, he was appointed vice president.
In 1995, he was elected to the Bihar Legislative Assembly from Jamshedpur East. He won five times from the same constituency. In 2004, he was selected as the BJP’s chief in Jharkhand. In the 2005 Jharkhand Legislative Assembly election, the BJP won 30 seats. He was also the Urban Development Minister during the NDA government of Arjun Munda as chief minister in 2005. He also led the state’s Indian general election in 2009. From 30 December 2009 to 29 May 2010, he served as Deputy Chief Minister of Jharkhand state, when Shibu Soren was the chief minister.
On August 16, 2014, he was also elected vice president of the BJP’s National Committee. He has shown assets worth approximately Rs. 21 lakh. When the BJP won a majority in the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly election in 2014, he became the state’s sixth and first non-tribal chief minister on December 28, 2014.
In the December 2019 Jharkhand Legislative Assembly elections, the BJP under his leadership won only 25 of the 81 assembly seats against the JMM alliance, forcing him to resign. He was defeated by Saryu Rai, an ex-BJP leader who ran as an independent candidate in the Jamshedpur east constituency, who received over 15,000 votes.
