Roy Blunt Contact Address

Roy Blunt (born January 10, 1950 in Niangua, Missouri, United States), is an American politician who was elected to the United States Senate as a Republican in 2010 and began representing Missouri in that body the following year. He previously served in the United States House of Representatives from 1997 to 2011, where he held the positions of majority whip (2003–07), acting majority leader (2005–06), and minority whip (2007–09).

Blunt’s father was a dairy farmer and a state representative in Missouri. Blunt earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history from Southwest Baptist University (B.A., 1970) and Southwest Missouri State University, respectively (M.A., 1972). During that time, he married Roseann Ray in 1967, and they had three children, one of whom, Matt Blunt, was governor of Missouri from 2005 to 2009. Blunt divorced in 2003 and later that year married Abigail Perlman. He adopted a child with his second wife.

Blunt was the clerk and chief election officer for Greene County, Missouri, from 1973 to 1984, when he was elected Missouri secretary of state (1985–93), becoming the state’s first Republican to hold the position in nearly 40 years. Following a failed gubernatorial campaign in 1992, he served as president of Southwest Baptist University (1993–96) before being elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1996. Blunt rose quickly through the Republican ranks after taking office in 1997. He was appointed chief deputy whip in 1999 and majority whip in 2003. After Rep. Tom DeLay was indicted in 2005 on charges of conspiracy to violate election laws in his home state of Texas, Blunt served as acting majority leader until Rep. John Boehner took over the position in 2006. Blunt became minority whip after Republicans lost their House majority in the 2006 elections. Blunt successfully ran for Senate in 2010, and he was sworn in the following year.

Blunt took a conservative stance on most issues during his time in Congress. He was an outspoken supporter of increased domestic oil production, the preservation of the Second Amendment’s guarantee of the right to bear arms, and lower federal income taxes. In 2003, he voted in favour of legislation that increased individual tax deductions for charitable contributions. He was a co-sponsor of the Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act of 2005, which went into effect in 2006 and was designed to make it more difficult for methamphetamine producers to obtain chemicals and drugs. On immigration, Blunt advocated for the construction of a border fence and the deployment of more border patrol agents. He was also a vocal critic of President Barack Obama’s health-care reform plan (2010).
