Sanaa Lathan was born on 19 September 1971 to actor and dancer Eleanor McCoy in New York City, New York, USA, and director and producer Stan Lathan. Tendaji Lathan, her brother, grew up into a well-known DJ. Her parents split later, but she stayed close to them both. She was reared partially with her father in Beverly Hills, half with her mother in New York.

She was a natural athlete and at an early age trained in gymnastics and dance. She was also exposed because of her parents to the entertainment world. In her younger days, she acted in a number of plays with the ‘Black Theater Workshop.’
