Sekhar Kammula was born on 4 February 1972 in Hyderabad, Telangana, India. He graduated from Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and went on to earn a master’s degree in computer science in the United States.
He worked in the IT industry for about three years before enrolling in film school at Howard University in Washington, D.C. and receiving his M.F.A (Film) degree. He worked on a variety of short and feature-length films in the United States during this period.
Dollar Dreams (2000), an indie film that was a critical hit and earned him the National Film Award for Best First Film by a Director, was his directorial debut. The film was shown at the India International Film Festival.

Kammula wrote, produced, and directed Life Is Beautiful in 2012. The film was well-received by reviewers and the general public. The film was compared to Happy Days (2007) by Firstpost, who noted parallels between the characters written by Kammula in both films. Later that year, he directed Anaamika, a Telugu remake of the 2012 Hindi film Kahaani, in which Nayantara played the role of Vidya Balan.
Fidaa, a romantic comedy starring Varun Tej and Sai Pallavi, grossed over 90 crore at the box office in 2017. His next film, Love Tale, starring Naga Chaitanya and Sai Pallavi, will be released in 2020.
