Shashi Tharoor is an Indian politician, writer, and former international diplomat who has represented Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, in the Lok Sabha since 2009. He previously served as Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and contested for Secretary-General in 2006.
He is also the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology and the President of the All India Professionals Congress. He previously chaired the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs (2014 to 2019). Shashi Tharoor was born on March 9, 1956, in London, United Kingdom. His father’s name is Chandran Tharoor and his mother’s name is Lily Tharoor. Shobha and Smitha Tharoor are Tharoor’s younger sisters. His father, who was born in Kerala, worked in London, Bombay, Calcutta, and Delhi, including a 25-year stint as group advertising manager for The Statesman. Tharoor Parameshwaran, the founder of Reader’s Digest in India, was his paternal uncle. Tharoor’s parents moved to India when he was two years old, and he enrolled in the Montfort School, Yercaud, in 1962, before moving to Bombay (now Mumbai) and attending the Campion School (1963–68). He attended St. Xavier’s Collegiate School in Kolkata from 1969 to 1971.
Tharoor received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from St Stephen’s College, University of Delhi, where he was president of the student union and formed the St. Stephen’s Quiz Club. Tharoor went to the United States the same year to pursue an MA in International Relations at Tufts University’s Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in Medford. Tharoor received his M.A. in 1976, his Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy in 1977, and his Ph.D. in International Relations and Affairs in 1978. Tharoor received the Robert B. Stewart Prize for the best student while pursuing his doctorate, and he was also the first editor of the Fletcher Forum of International Affairs. He was the youngest person in the history of the Fletcher School to obtain a doctorate at the age of 22.

Political Journey:
1. Tharoor’s UN career began in 1978 as a staff member of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Geneva.
2. From 1981 to 1984, he was the head of the UNHCR office in Singapore.
3. In 1989, he was selected as special assistant to the Under-Secretary-General for Special Political Affairs, a unit that later became the Peacekeeping Operations wing in New York.
4. In 1996, Tharoor was named director of communications and special projects and executive assistant to then-Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
5. In 2001, he was appointed Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information, as well as Head of the Department of Public Information (UNDPI).
6. Shashi Tharoor was nominated by the Indian government for the position of UN Secretary-General in 2006.
7. On February 9, 2007, Tharoor retired as UN Under-Secretary-General and left the UN on April 1, 2007.
8. In the 2009 Indian General Elections, Tharoor selected as the Congress Party’s MP candidate from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Tharoor won the election by a margin of approximately 100,000 votes.

Controversies:
1. In September 2009, Shashi Tharoor was embroiled in a controversy for staying in a five-star hotel for more than three months during a time when the government was discussing austerity.
2. Tharoor stated on Twitter in 2009 that he would travel “cattle class” in solidarity with all of our “holy cows.” He was accused of comparing the traveling public to cattle.
3. On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, he suggested that people work rather than stay at home and take a holiday, thus paying true homage to Mahatma Gandhi.
4. He accompanied then-Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Saudi Arabia in February 2010, where he said “We believe Saudi Arabia has a long and close relationship with Pakistan, making it an even more valuable interlocutor for us.
