Smriti Irani is an Indian politician, producer, and former model. Irani serves in India’s Union Cabinet as a Minister. She is the Minister of Textiles in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, and since May 2019, she has also served as the Minister of Women and Child Development in Modi’s second cabinet. She is a Member of Parliament of the Lok Sabha, representing Amethi, and is a senior member of the Bharatiya Janata Party.


Smriti Irani was born on 23 March 1976, in New Delhi, India. She comes from a family of three sisters, the first of which is the eldest. Her grandfather was an RSS swayamsevak, and her mother was a Jana Sangh member, so she has been a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) since childhood.

She went to the Holy Child Auxilium School in New Delhi and received her education there. She then went to the University of Delhi’s School of Open Learning. She disclosed that she took her first-year B.Com exams at Delhi University’s School of Open Learning, but that she did not complete the three-year degree program. Irani announced that she had a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree as a candidate in the 2004 elections from Chandni Chowk in Delhi.

Zubin Irani, a Parsi businessman, married Smriti in 2001. Their first child, a son named Zohr, was born in October of that year. Their second child, a daughter named Zoish, was born in September of 2003. By faith, all of her children are Parsis. Shanelle, Zubin Irani’s daughter from a previous marriage with a coordinator and former beauty contestant Mona Irani, is now a law student at Georgetown University in the United States.

Irani, along with Gauri Pradhan Tejwani, was a contestant in Miss India 1998 pageant who failed to make the top nine. Irani collaborated with Mika Singh on the song “Boliyan” from the album “Sawan Mein Lag Gayi Aag” in 1998. She made her television debut in the year 2000 with the Star Plus shows Aatish and Hum Hain Kal Aaj Aur Kal. She also appeared in the DD metro series Kavita.

Irani was cast as Tulsi Virani in Ekta Kapoor’s Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi on Star Plus in the mid-2000s. She has won four Indian Telly Awards and five straight Indian Television Academy Awards for Best Actress – Famous. Irani quit the show in June 2007 after a falling out with producer Ekta Kapoor. She was replaced by Gautami Kapoor. In a special episode in May 2008, she reconciled with Kapoor and made her comeback.

She also appeared in Zee TV’s Ramayan in 2001, portraying Sita, an epic heroine. Under her banner Ugraya Entertainment, Irani co-produced the show Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Aasmaan with Balaji Telefilms in 2006. In it, she also played Uma, the main character. She produced and starred as Vasudha in the Sony TV series Virrudh in 2007. She also co-produced and starred in 9X’s Mere Apne, alongside Vinod Khanna, as the protagonist. In Zee TV’s Teen Bahuraaniyaan, she also played a supporting role.


Irani and Sakshi Tanwar hosted the dance-based reality show Yeh Hai Jalwa on 9X in 2008. Waaris, a Zee TV show she created in the same year, ran until 2009. She starred in Maniben.com, a SAB TV comedy show, in 2009. In partnership with Contiloe Entertainment, she also co-produced the film. Amrita, a Bengali film, was released in 2012.

Irani is a Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) from Amethi, where she beat Congress President Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha elections in 2019. In the year 2003, Irani became a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. In 2004, she was elected to the Maharashtra Youth Wing’s vice-president position. She ran against Kapil Sibal from the Chandni Chowk constituency in Delhi in the 2004 general elections for the 14th Lok Sabha but lost. She was elected to the BJP’s executive committee as an executive officer.

Irani vowed to fast until he died in December 2004, blaming then-Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for the BJP’s electoral defeats. After the BJP’s central leadership threatened to take action against her, she later withdrew this demand. Irani expressed her worries about the welfare of women in the capital when campaigning for Vijay Goel’s candidacy in New Delhi in May 2009. As a measure, she supported the death penalty for rapists.

In June 2016, she revealed that six new universities will launch yoga departments. Mrs. Irani was sent from MHRD to the Ministry of Textiles in a cabinet reshuffle in July 2016. When former Minister M.Venkaiah Naidu resigned from the Ministry to run for Vice-President, she was given the additional charge of Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (India) in July 2017.
