Stephen Edwin King is an American author of novels in the genres of suspense, horror, science fiction, and fantasy.Stephen sold his first professional short story (“The Glass Floor”) to Startling Mystery Stories in 1967, marking the beginning of his writing career. Throughout the first several years of his marriage, he continued to write articles for men’s magazines to supplement his income. In subsequent years, several of these stories were compiled into the Night Shift anthology or were included in other anthologies.

Doubleday & Co. approved the book, Carrie, for publication in the spring of 1973, and it was first published in 1974. Stephen heard on Mother’s Day of that year from Bill Thompson, his new editor at Doubleday, that a successful paperback sale would enable him to quit teaching and devote his time to writing full-time. Stephen’s mother’s deteriorating health forced the Kings to relocate their expanding family to southern Maine at the end of the summer of 1973. Stephen wrote his next published novel in a small room in the garage of a summer home on Sebago Lake in North Windham, where he was staying for the winter. Stephen’s mother passed away from cancer at the age of 59 during this period.


Carrie was released in the spring of 1974, and it was a critical and commercial success. The Kings relocated from Maine to Boulder, Colorado, the following autumn. They only stayed for a little more than a year, during which time Stephen penned The Shining, which is situated in the state of Colorado. The Kings returned to Maine in the summer of 1975 and bought a house in the Lakes Region in western Maine, where they have lived ever since.

Stephen completed writing The Stand while staying at that home, which is situated in Boulder for a large portion of the story. Bridgton was also the setting for the novel The Dead Zone. After spending three months of their planned year-long vacation in England, the Kings decided to cut their trip short and return home in mid-December, after buying a new house in Center Lovell, Maine. The Kings bought a second home in Bangor in 1980, but they continued to utilize the Center Lovell property as a summer residence. Now that they are retired, Stephen and Tabitha spend the winters in Florida and the rest of the year at their homes in Bangor and Center Lovell.

Naomi Rachel, Joe Hill, and Owen Phillip are the Kings’ three children, and they have four grandkids between them. Stephen is of Scottish and Irish descent, measures 6’4″ tall, and weighs about 200 pounds. In addition to having blue eyes and a light complexion, he also has thick, black hair with a touch of white in it, which he occasionally sports in his beard between the conclusion of the World Series and the start of baseball spring training in Florida. He is 6 feet tall and weighs 185 pounds. During other seasons, he may sport a mustache on occasion. Since he was a kid, he has been wearing spectacles.

He has put some of his undergraduate dramatic society expertise to good use by appearing in cameo roles in many of the film adaptations of his writings, as well as a small role in the George Romero film Knightriders, which he directed. Joe Hill King was also featured in the 1982 horror film Creepshow, which was directed by John Carpenter. Stephen made his directing debut, as well as authoring the script, for the 1985 film Maximum Overdrive (which was based on his short story “Trucks”), which was also his feature film debut.

Stephen and Tabitha offer scholarships to deserving high school students in their community, as well as contributions to a variety of other local and national organizations. As a writer, Stephen has received many awards, including the National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters in 2003 and the National Medal of Arts in 2014.
