Subramanian Swamy is an Indian politician, economist, and statistician who is a shortlisted Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, the Indian Parliament’s upper house. He was a professor of Mathematical Economics at the Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi before entering politics. Swamy served as a Cabinet Minister in the Chandra Shekhar government and was a member of India’s Planning Commission. Swamy served as Chairman of the Commission on Labour Standards and International Trade under former Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao from 1994 to 1996. Swamy was a Janata Party member for a long time, serving as its president until 2013 when he entered the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
He has written extensively on Indian foreign policy, focusing on China, Pakistan, and Israel. On April 26, 2016, he was appointed to the Rajya Sabha.
Subramanian Swamy Biography:
Subramanian Swamy was born on September 15, 1939, in Mylapore, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. He considers himself to be a Brahmin. Sitarama Subramanian was his father. He was a bureaucrat. Padmavathi was his mother. She was a housewife. Ram Subramanian is his younger brother, and he has two younger sisters.
Sitarama Subramanian was a member of the Indian Statistical Service and the director of the Central Statistical Institute in Delhi. He also served as a statistical adviser to the Government of India.
Swamy’s family moved to New Delhi when he was six months old, from Madurai in Tamil Nadu.
Education:
Swamy received his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Hindu College, University of Delhi. He then went on to earn a master’s degree in statistics from the Indian Statistical Institute in Kolkata. He was later recommended by Hendrik S. Houthakker and went to Harvard University on a full Rockefeller scholarship, where he received his Ph.D. in Economics in 1965. Simon Kuznets, a Nobel laureate, served as his thesis adviser. While he was a doctoral student at Harvard, he attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a cross-registered student and later worked as an Assistant Economics Affairs Officer at the United Nations Secretariat in New York City in 1963. He later worked as a resident tutor at Harvard University’s Lowell House.
Family and personal life:
Swamy met Roxana Kapadia, an Indian lady of Parsi ethnicity studying for a Ph.D. in mathematics at Harvard University. They got married in June 1966. The couple is blessed with two daughters. Gitanjali Swamy is the elder daughter. She is an entrepreneur and private equity professional. She is married to Sanjay Sarma, an MIT professor. Suhasini Haidar is the younger daughter. She is a print and television journalist who is married to Nadeem Haidar.
Academic career:
Swamy joined the Department of Economics at the Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences as an assistant professor in July 1965, shortly after getting his Ph.D. in economics from Harvard. He was promoted to associate professor in 1969. Amartya Sen invited him as an associate professor to occupy the chair on Chinese studies at the Delhi School of Economics. He accepted the offer and even traveled to India to begin his new job, but his appointment was canceled at the last minute due to his views on India’s economic and nuclear policies.
Swamy then went on to become a full Professor of Mathematical Economics at the Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi, where he worked from 1969 to the early 1970s.
He was expelled from the position by the board of governors in the early 1970s but was legally reinstated by the Supreme Court of India in the late 1990s. He held the post until 1991 when he resigned to become a cabinet minister. He was a member of the IIT, Delhi’s Board of Governors (1977–80), and the Council of IITs (1980–82). He also taught economics courses at Harvard Summer School until 2011, when the Harvard faculty voted to cancel Swamy’s classes due to his “offensive” remarks about Muslims.
Swamy presently serves as Chairman of the SCMS Group of Institutions, which includes the SCMS Cochin School of Business in Kochi.
Political Career:
Early politics:
Swamy’s career began with his participation in the Sarvodaya movement, which was an apolitical movement at that time but later served as the foundation for the formation of the Janata Party. His political career took a significant turn after he was fired from IIT. His liberal economic policies did not sit well with then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who mocked him as a “Santa Claus with unrealistic ideas.” Later, he was ejected from the Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi. This was the start of his active political career. The Bharatiya Janata Dal-Secular, a staunch opponent of Indira Gandhi, elected him to the Rajya Sabha, India’s upper house of parliament.
Between 1974 and 1999, he was elected as a Member of Parliament five times. As a Lok Sabha candidate, he represented Mumbai North East twice (1977 and 1980) and Madurai once (1998). He was a Rajya Sabha candidate who represented Uttar Pradesh in the Parliament in 1974.
Swamy was a long-time member of the right-wing Janata Party before joining the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2013.

Controversies:
(a) Swamy provoked controversy with his tweet calling for the removal of former RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan, claiming that he is mentally not completely Indian.
(b) As Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley was being beamed by TV channels in Beijing while dressed in a coat and tie, Swamy made another remark about his rival, saying “Our Ministers should be instructed by the BJP to dress in traditional and modernized Indian attire while abroad. They appear to be waiters in their coats and ties.”
