Lee Tae-Yong Biography:

Taeyong

Lee Taeyong was born in Seoul, South Korea on July 1, 1995. He received his diploma from the Seoul School of Performing Arts. He was selected on the street by an SM Entertainment recruiter at the age of 18 and joined the company after having completed the audition by singing the national anthem. On December 2, 2013, he was introduced as a member of the SM Rookies, a pre-debut idol training team.

Despite having no background in dance prior to his training and his dance coach expressing doubts about his ability to catch up, he was designated the roles of main rapper and main dancer upon his debut. A video of Taeyong performing a segment of his song “Open the Door” was posted on SMTown’s YouTube channel in 2014. Taeyong later appeared on Red Velvet’s song “Be Natural” later that year. In both releases, he was identified as “SR14B Taeyong.”

2016-18: Debut with NCT, NCT U, NCT 127

Taeyong made his NCT U debut in April 2016 with the song “The 7th Sense,” which was also NCT’s first overall release. He made his debut as a representative and leader of NCT 127 in July of that year with their first EP NCT #127, for which he co-wrote two songs, including the main single “Fire Truck.”

NCT 127 brought back in January 2017 with the EP Limitless. Taeyong contributed four songs to the album, with the song “Baby Don’t Like It” is his first credit as a composer. Cherry Bomb, the band’s third EP, was released in June. Taeyong co-wrote all but one of the songs on the album. The new album, “Cherry Bomb,” was later named by Billboard and Idolator as one of the best K-pop songs of the year.

Taeyong worked on two projects with other SM Entertainment artists in 2017. In May, Hitchhiker released “Around,” an experimental song with an accompanying music video, as part of the SM Station project. Lee also collaborated with singer and producer Yoo Young-jin on the rock ballad “Cure,” which was released by SM Station in August 2017.

Taeyong appeared on the OST for the drama “School 2017,” alongside NCT 127 vocalists Taeil and Doyoung, as rapper and songwriter for the R&B ballad “Stay in My Life.”

NCT 2018 Empathy was released in March 2018 as part of a large-scale project that brought together all of the group’s subgroups. Taeyong was featured in five of the album’s units (NCT 127, NCT 2018, and three units of NCT U). He contributed to the creation of five songs for Empathy. In May 2018, he made his Japanese debut with NCT 127’s EP Chain. The album reached No. 2 on the Oricon Weekly Albums chart.

Taeyong, along with labelmate BoA, joined the cast of Food Diary, a variety show that follows a group of celebrities as they explore farming and the process of food production.

Taeyong collaborated on four songs for NCT 127’s debut full-length album, Regular-Irregular, including the promotional single “Regular.” The song was at first released in two languages: English and Korean, but it later became the debut single of WayV, a Chinese subunit.

2019-present: Solo work, SuperM

Taeyong co-wrote the song “Lips” for NCT 127’s first full-length Japanese album, Awaken, which was released in April.

Taeyong’s first solo song, “Long Flight,” which he wrote and co-composed, was released in July 2019, along with a music video. Season 3 of the SM Station project concluded with this track. The single debuted at number six on the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart.

Taeyong was announced as a member of SuperM, a K-pop supergroup formed by SM Entertainment in collaboration with Capitol Records, on August 8, 2019. The group’s promotional efforts started in October, with an emphasis on the American market. Taeyong co-wrote the song “No Manners” for the group’s first EP, SuperM. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 Album chart.

That same month, Taeyong and Punch teamed up on an OST song for Hotel del Luna, named “Love del Luna,” which is the thirteenth (and final) series of the soundtrack.
