Since January 2018 I have been pleased to serve as your Senator and I am proud of the job we have been doing since then. In the summer of 1984, I moved to Minnesota with my new husband Archie. My first work was at General Mills in Minnesota. Archie and I have moved to St. Louis Park, had Sam and Mason (who are currently married!) our two sons, and have found our lives in Minnesota. A few years later, I began my own business and became more active in my neighbourhood. I just adored it. I loved it. This work led me to become a Chief of Staff of the Mayor of Minneapolis, then a Chief of Staff of Governor Dayton at Planed Parenthood. When Mark asked me to run with him, I never looked back and I liked to serve all Minnesotans, where each day I saw the enthusiasm, innovation and hard work that makes Minnesota so amazing.
I worked hard through the parties in my first year in the Senate to get things done for Minnesotans. I’m not afraid of standing up for what I think is right for Minnesota, and I’m ready to work with anyone wanting to work with me to advance good ideas. I’ve helped to draught legislation that has been enacted, one that extends career and technical education resources, one that improves funds for states and tribes to confront the opioid problem and the bipartisan Farm Bill that benefits farmers across the state.
The first thing I did in the Senate was to submit legislation that cuts the cost of prescription drugs in large pharmaceutical corporations. I contributed to the drafting of bipartisan legislation to expand and strengthen the treatment and prevention of the opioid epidemic and to the signing of legislation to expand services of mental health into schools and communities. I have also worked along the whole corridor to pass legislation extending career and training and introduced legislation to increase access to childcare.
Food and agriculture are at the core of the Minnesota economy and that is why I pushed for a position on the Senate Committee on Agriculture. We have worked hard to pass and sign a bipartisan agriculture bill that supports farmers throughout the state. The Farm Bill contains many provisions that I authorised to extend rural broadband, boost conservation programmes and aid young farmers to move forward.
And I’m just starting. In November 2018, we won a 10-point win, you raised your voice to elect me to the Senate. I’m grateful to all of you in Minnesota who trust me, and every day I work hard to get your voice heard in the U.S. Senate. I served as Chief of Staff and Lieutenant Governor together with Governor Dayton before I was your Senator and I’m proud of what we did together: balancing our state budget, increasing educational investment, including the free, full day children’s kindergarten for all Minnesota families. We raised the minimum wage for Minnesota, extended state employee medical family leave, invested in farming research and passed marriage equality in Minnesota. We’ve done a lot. But so much more has to be done.
I began my work at General Mills and created my own little business after a few years, and I built it successfully, volunteering with a child or two in our neighbourhood. I left the business sector when I got the opportunity to enhance women’s access to healthcare as an executive in Planned Parenthood. Prior to being elected Lt. Governor, Tina worked as Chief of Staff of Governor Dayton. She supervised the day-to-day administration of the state government, a company with more than 35,000 people. Tina oversaw the Better Government Initiative in the Administration to make government work for people better – to speed up allowances, make government paperwork and procedures easier to comprehend and save public money through more efficient and customer-friendly services.
