4. No one to fund: When Vijay was trying to start One97, he took out a Rs. 8 lakh loan. He had borrowed a massive sum for a common man back then, and he had taken the principal amount at a rate of 24 percent interest, trapping him in an unpayable debt cycle. To make ends meet, he had to take on petty jobs such as setting up LAN links, giving guest lectures, and so on.
Paytm is a major wager: Although India’s telecom infrastructure was improving in 2010, Vijay’s investors were sceptical of the concept of a mass-market mobile-first customer service. To finally launch the brand, he personally put $2 million on the line.
