Wiz Khalifa is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and actor best known by his stage name Wiz Khalifa. Show and Prove, his debut album, was released in 2006, and he signed with Warner Bros. Records in 2007. “Say Yes,” a Eurodance-influenced song that earned urban radio airplay and charted on the Rhythmic Top 40 and Hot Rap Tracks charts in 2008, was his first minor hit.

In November 2009, Khalifa parted ways with Warner Bros. and released his second album, Deal or No Deal. He signed with Atlantic Records after releasing the mixtape Kush and Orange Juice as a free download in April 2010. He’s also remembered for “Black and Yellow,” his first single for Atlantic, which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Rolling Papers, his first album for the label, was released on March 29, 2011. On December 4, 2012, he released O.N.I.F.C., which was supported by the singles “Work Hard, Play Hard” and “Remember You.” Wiz’s fifth album, Blacc Hollywood, was released on August 18, 2014, with the lead track “We Dem Boyz” as the lead single. He released “See You Again” in March 2015 for the soundtrack of the film Furious 7, and the song spent 12 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100.

Cameron Jibril Thomaz was born on September 8, 1987, in Minot, North Dakota, to parents who were both in the military. When Khalifa was about three years old, his parents divorced. He grew up as a military brat, as his parents’ military service required him to travel on a daily basis. Khalifa was born in Germany and raised in Germany, the United Kingdom, and Japan before moving to Pittsburgh with his mother in 1996 to attend Taylor Allderdice High School. Before he was a teenager, Khalifa started composing and performing his own lyrics shortly after moving to Pittsburgh.

Khalifa, an Arabic word meaning “successor,” and knowledge, which was shortened to Wiz when Khalifa was a young child, became his stage name.

According to Khalifa, the name came from being dubbed “young Wiz” because he was “great at everything I did,” and his grandfather, who is Muslim, “gave me that name because he felt like that’s what I was doing with my music.” On his 17th birthday, he got a tattoo of his stage name.

He was regularly recording his music in a studio named I.D. Labs by the age of 15. The studio’s management was so taken with Khalifa’s lyrics that they decided to let him record for free.

Wiz Khalifa’s contribution to a mixtape of various new Pittsburgh artists piqued the attention of Rostrum Records president Benjy Grinberg in 2004, when the rapper’s contribution to a mixtape of various new Pittsburgh artists piqued his interest.

When Grinberg first met the 16-year-old artist, he knew he wanted to work with him right away. “Even though he wasn’t fully grown, you could just tell that he was a diamond in the rough, and that with some polishing, encouragement, and backing, he could become something extraordinary,” he later told HitQuarters. Soon after, Khalifa signed with the label and began a seven-year period of artist growth. Prince of the City: Welcome to Pistolvania, Khalifa’s first mixtape, was released in 2005. In 2006, he released his first full-length album, Show and Prove, as a result of the mixtape. That year, Rolling Stone magazine called Khalifa a “artist to watch.”

Khalifa signed to Warner Bros. Records in 2007 and released two mixtapes through Rostrum Records: Grow Season, hosted by DJ Green Lantern, and Prince of the City 2, released on November 20, 2007. “Say Yeah,” his first Warner Bros. single, peaked at number 25 on the Billboard Rhythmic Top 40 chart and number 20 on Billboard’s Hot Rap Tracks chart. Alice Deejay’s “Better Off Alone” is sampled in the video. Over music from Underworld’s “Born Slippy,” Usher’s “Love in This Club,” and the Cure’s “In Between Days,” Khalifa’s vocals from “Tell Yes” appear near the end of Pittsburgh mash up producer Girl Talk’s 2008 song, Feed the Animals. On August 2, 2008, Khalifa performed alongside The Game, David Banner, and Play-n-Skillz at U92’s Summer Jam at the USANA Amphitheatre in West Valley City, Utah. On Rostrum Records, Khalifa released the mixtapes Star Power in September 2008 and Flight School in April 2009.

After multiple delays in the release of his expected debut album for the label, First Flight, Khalifa parted ways with Warner Bros. Records in July 2009. “I learned a lot during my time there and grew as an artist during the process,” Khalifa told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. I’m delighted to be going forward with all of my materials and to have the ability to guide my next steps.” On July 31, 2009, Khalifa appeared at the Amphitheatre at Station Square in Pittsburgh with Girl Talk, Modey Lemon, Donora, Grand Buffet, and Don Caballero to announce the end of his relationship with Warner Bros.

On August 9, 2009, Khalifa continued his relationship with Rostrum Records by releasing the single “Teach U to Fly” and the mixtape How Fly, a collaboration with New Orleans rapper Curren$y. On the mixtape, Khalifa adopted a more melodic sound, switching between singing and rapping. At the 2009 CMJ Music Marathon in New York City, he opened for Wu-Tang Clan member U-God. On November 2, 2009, Khalifa released the mixtape Burn After Rolling, in which he raps over familiar beats from other artists, including Beyoncé’s “If I Were A Kid” and “Diva,” Empire of the Sun’s “Walking on a Dream,” Camp Lo’s “Luchini AKA This Is It,” and Drake’s “Best I Ever Had.” On November 24, 2009, Wiz Khalifa released his second album, Deal or No Deal.
