Zoramthanga is a prominent Indian politician who has served as the Chief Minister of Mizoram since 2018 and held the position from 1998 to 2008. He was born on July 13, 1944. In addition to that, he is the leader of the Mizo National Front (MNF) party. Since 2018, he has represented the Aizawl East I constituency in the Mizoram Legislative Assembly. Before that, he served as the representative for the Champhai constituency from 1998 to 2008. During the Mizo National Front’s push toward independence, he served as Laldenga’s second-in-command and later became the party’s leader after Laldenga’s death.

As a result of Laldenga’s passing away in 1990, the MNF became a legitimate political party. 1987 he held the Minister of Finance and Minister of Education positions. His party was defeated by the Indian National Congress in the elections for the legislature in 2008. He ran for office in the North Champhai and South Champhai seats but was unsuccessful in both. On December 8, 2008, he sent his resignation letter to Governor MM Lakhera, and he departed from his position three days later.

He has pointed to opposition to incumbents as the reason his party was defeated. As a result of his party’s victory in the state assembly elections in 2018, he regained his position as Chief Minister. He is the Chief Minister of India, who has been in office the longest. In 1950, Zoramthanga enrolled in the elementary school located in Samthang. After finishing third grade, he enrolled in South Khawbung middle school the following year (1954), remaining until he graduated sixth grade in 1956.

In 1957, he uprooted his life to attend the Gandhi Memorial High School in Champhai. In 1960, he welcomed his family to join him in Champhai. In 1961, he received his high school diploma. Because Mizoram did not have access to higher education at that period, his family’s financial position precluded him from pursuing further study. Instead, he took over as Headmaster of Champhai Vengthlang Middle School, where he had previously taught.

He traveled to Imphal, Manipur, and enrolled in a pre-university college (PUC, the equivalent to upper secondary) at Dhanamanjuri (D.M.) College of Arts, which has since been integrated into Dhanamanjuri University. His money from his pay and most of his self-support went into his education. In 1962, he received his diploma from PUC and immediately enrolled in B.A. classes. In 1966, he received his certification with honors in the study of English.

When asked about his struggles, he answered, “During my college days, I worked in a stone quarry, chiseling and carrying loads of boulders.” He was referring to his time spent working there during his student years. I worked hard to get my degree. The money I made at the time was sufficient for me to maintain myself. In 1965, while Zoramthanga was in his last year of college, he formally decided to join the liberation struggle led by the Mizo National Front.

After the MNF rebellion began in 1966, he decided to become a member of the guerrilla organization and went into hiding along the border between Bangladesh and East Pakistan. He was allowed to serve as the Run Bung Area secretary, a role he maintained for three years. In 1969, every member of the MNF cadre traveled to East Pakistan. He was appointed to the position of Secretary by President Laldenga. He spent seven years in this position. In 1979, he was promoted to Vice President and given additional responsibilities.

The MNF uprising ended in 1986 when the government of India and the Mizoram National Front signed the Mizoram Peace Accord. It was proposed that MNF take charge of the temporary state government. Zoramthanga was given a ministerial position in the cabinet when Laldenga was promoted to the work of Chief Minister. On February 20, 1987, Mizoram was officially recognized as a complete state. By then, the MNF had established itself as a legitimate political party.

The same month also saw the inaugural election for the Mizoram State Legislative Assembly, which resulted in the MNF obtaining the majority of assembly seats, 24 out of 40. Champhai was the winning constituency for Zoramthanga’s election. Zoramthanga was appointed Minister of Finance and Education in the first Mizoram State Legislative Assembly.

After Laldenga passed away in 1990, he succeeded his predecessor as the Mizo National Front president. Zoramthanga was victorious in the Champhai seat in the 1993 election, despite the MNF’s defeat at the hands of the Indian National Congress party. He now serves as the Opposition Leader in the legislative assembly after being given that role when the elections for the group took place at the tail end of 1998.

He guided his party to victory and became Mizoram’s first-ever Chief Minister due to their success. In the election that took place in 2003, he won re-election and became Chief Minister for a second time. However, his party was defeated in the polls for the Assembly in 2008, falling to the Congress party. He was unsuccessful in his bid to become the representative for either the Champhai North or Champhai South seats.

In the elections of 2013, he and his party once again suffered a humiliating loss to the Congress party. In 2018, his party was able to win back the majority. On the 15th of December 2018, he took office as the Chief Minister of Mizoram after being elected from the Aizawl East-I seat.Zoramthanga is an eloquent debater. While still a student at New Delhi University, he triumphed in an intercollegiate debate championship there.

He attends the Mizoram Presbyterian Church as his home church. On February 2, 1988, he tied the knot with Roneihsangi. They have a daughter named Milari as well as a boy named Rothansiama. In 2010, Zoramthanga was accused of many instances of bribery and corruption. The most serious charge is the provision of fence materials by the Department of Agriculture to the defendant’s private property in Aii Puk during the years he served as Chief Minister (1998–2008).

The provision was carried out under the guise of the Aii Puk Zau Cooperative Farming Society, which Zoramthanga controls. An anti-corruption group known as the People’s Right to Information and Development Society of Mizoram (PRISM) first presented a Public Interest Litigation to the Gauhati High Court in 2007 and then did so again in 2009.

As a result of PRISM’s inaction, the allegations against Aii Puk were sent to the Anticorruption Bureau of the Mizoram Police. These charges included supplying Aii Puk with fence materials and extorting money from government contractors. PRISM also claimed that Aii Puk’s wealth was disproportionate to his salary. On September 16, 2010, the Anticorruption Bureau (ACB) filed corruption proceedings against him under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. As a result, his home was searched for evidence the next day.

In 2010, the ACB indicated that the overall property worth in Zoramthanga had increased to 90.9 million from the official declaration of 13.8 million in 2003. This represents a significant increase in value. Zoramthanga said that his brother L. Nghakliana and his nephew Zoramchhana each owned 44.9 million rands, which he handled on their behalf. This figure represented Zoramthanga’s total capital. The charges were thrown out by a court in Mizoram designated as a Special Judge under the Prevention of Corruption Act on November 8th, 2021.

In the case of Aii Puk, the court acquitted Zoramthanga of accusations related to the abuse of authority. Regarding the claims of excessive wealth, the court said it “did not find sufficient evidence to prove” the allegations. An agricultural development initiative was initiated in 2002 by the Ministry of Zoramthanga in large part to reduce the impact of the slash-and-burn technique. A program known as the Mizoram Intodelhna Project (MIP) was developed to provide complimentary financial assistance to farmers interested in developing alternative agricultural practices.

PRISM reported in 2009 to the Anticorruption Bureau that Zoramthanga, H. Rammawi, who was the Agriculture Minister at the time, and Lalhuapzauva, who was the Adviser to the Chief Minister, had handed substantial amounts of money to private companies on a loan basis, which was against the criteria for the project. According to the claim, the money paid to Mizoram Venus Bamboo Product Pvt. Ltd. was 5 million rupees. In comparison, the amount given to Hnahlan Grape Growers’ Society and Champhai Grape Growers’ Society was 8.3 million rupees each.

2009 the ACB began its investigation, and in 2013, it issued a chargesheet in connection with the case. In 2018, the Gauhati High Court referred the matter to the Special Court for the Prevention of Corruption for further consideration.2019 was the year that the first court hearing was scheduled to take place. However, it was ultimately postponed since a witness could not be located. On February 17, 2021, the three defendants were brought before the court for their first appearance. On March 30, 2021, the Special Judge found insufficient evidence to convict and acquit them.

The body of Revd. Chanchinmawia, the moderator of the Mizoram Presbyterian Church Synod and Chairman of the Mizoram People’s Forum, was discovered on the morning of October 1, 2007, at his quarters-residence in Khatla, Aizawl, Mizoram. He had passed away the previous evening. The cut wounds and bruises on his body were visible even though he was lying in a pool of blood. On his side were a bloody hammer and a knife. In December 2007, the police report used as the basis for the decision rendered by the Additional District Magistrate (Judicial) of Aizawl said that the incident was a case of suicide. The opinion of his son Ramdinpuia, who the church supported, was contrary; he thought it was murder. In 2008, the investigation into the crime was restarted, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation was given responsibility for handling it. The CBI did not make any more headway.

A decade later, in the year 2018, a piece of information was published in a newsletter called Congress Thlifim claiming that the death of Chanchinmawia was the result of a case of murder and that the then-Chief Minister Zoramthanga was the one who planned the killing. According to the newsletter, during the questioning of criminal suspects, one of them, Muanhlua, said that he knew six persons who Zoramthanga hired to commit the murder, and a voice record showed that Muanhlua requested Zoramthanga a massive number of money to stay quiet. In addition, the newsletter stated that a voice record mentioned that Muanhlua asked Zoramthanga for a large sum of money for keeping silent.

Thansanga, an informant for the newsletter, was the target of a legal action initiated in March 2017 by the Mizo National Front and B. Zorampara, the head of the Peace Accord MNF Returnees Association. Thansanga also said that Zorampara was the one who was responsible for recruiting the killers who were from Manipur. On May 17, 2017, Zoramthanga initiated legal action for defamation against Thansanga, together with the publication’s editor, David M. Thangliana, and the publisher, James Thanghmingliana.
