Rayford Trae young was a member of the Oklahoma Sooners basketball team in college. With 22 single-game assists in 2017, he tied for the NCAA Division I single-game assist record at the time. Young scored 38 points in a 117–110 season-opening win over the Detroit Pistons on October 24, 2019. Young scored 49 points in a 105–104 overtime loss to the Indiana Pacers on November 29, including 21 points in the fourth quarter. He was named to the NBA All-Star team as a backcourt starter on January 23, 2020. Young had 45 points and 14 assists in a 152–133 win over the Washington Wizards on January 26. Young set a career high with 50 points in a 129–124 win over the Miami Heat on February 20, nailing 8-of-15 three-pointers.

Young had 37 points, seven assists, and six rebounds in a 124–104 season-opening win over the Chicago Bulls on December 23, 2020.
