Trivendra Singh Rawat is a politician from India who represented as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand from 2017 to 2021.
From 1979 to 2002, Rawat was a representative of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, where he served as the organizing secretary of the Uttarakhand region, and later the Uttarakhand state, after the state’s formation in 2000. In the State’s first legislative assembly elections in 2002, he was appointed from Doiwala. He was re-elected in 2007 and served as the State’s Minister of Agriculture.
Rawat served as the in-charge of Jharkhand and the president of the Uttarakhand cadre of the Bharatiya Janata Party. After re-election in Doiwala in 2017, he was named Chief Minister after his party won a majority and established the government. Rawat resigned on March 9, 2021, citing a “collective decision” made by the party.
Trivendra Singh Rawat Biography:
Rawat was born on December 20, 1960, in the village of Khairasain in the Kotdwar tehsil of Uttarakhand’s Pauri Garhwal district. He was the family’s ninth and youngest child. His father’s name is Late Pratap Singh and his mother’s name is Bochha Devi. He earned his master’s degree in journalism from the Birla Campus in Srinagar, which is part of the Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University.
Rawat joined the right-wing Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in 1979 before becoming its Dehradun pracharak (campaigner) in 1985. He later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a political party affiliated with it. He was appointed as the BJP’s organizing secretary for the Uttarakhand region, where he worked alongside senior leader Lalji Tandon. He was also an active participant in the Uttarakhand movement, for which he was arrested several times. Rawat was appointed BJP state cadre president after the region was granted statehood in 2000.
Rawat lost a by-election in Doiwala in 2014, when former Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal vacated the seat. In 2017, he was elected to the same Assembly constituency of Doiwala.
His tweet about linguistic preferences on July 27, 2017, sparked a controversy, and he was blamed for preferring the Garhwali language over the Kumaoni language.
Rawat stated in July 2019 that cows are the only animals that exhale oxygen and that living in close proximity to cows could cure tuberculosis. This unscientific statement sparked a debate.
Rawat resigned from his position as Chief Minister of Uttarakhand on March 9, 2021. This came after meetings with BJP leaders in Delhi, where observers from the center reported on the growing dissent against Rawat among MLAs and ministers, including mismanagement during the Chamoli flash floods.
