Whitney Cummings was born in Washington, D.C., on September 4, 1982. Patti Cummings, a Texas native and Neiman Marcus public relations director at Mazza Gallerie, and Eric Lynn Cummings, a lawyer and venture capitalist, are her parents. Kevin, her older half-brother, and Ashley, her older sister, are her siblings.

She claims to have grown up in a broken, alcoholic family. She moved in with her aunt in Virginia when she was 12 years old.
