Wizkid (sometimes spelled WizKid), Wizzy, or Starboy are the stage names of Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun. He is a singer and songwriter from Nigeria. Wizkid, one of Africa’s biggest artists, is the most adorned Nigerian artist of all time (and the most decorated African artist in the world), as well as one of the most revolutionary Afro-pop artists of the modern world.

Wizkid Biography:

Wizkid was born as Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun in Surulere, Lagos, on July 16, 1990. He was raised in an interfaith family with twelve female siblings. His mother is a Pentecostal Christian, while his father is Muslim. Wizkid was educated at Ijebu Ode Grammar School.  In a 2012 radio interview with Tim Westwood, he stated that “his father has three wives.” Wizkid revealed in another interview with Adesope of Factory 78 TV that he created the Glorious Five with a couple of his church friends.

Wizkid is the father of three sons by three different women. Boluwatife Balogun was born on May 13, 2011, Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun Jr was born on January 15, 2016, and Zion Ayo Balogun was born on October 28, 2017.

Career:

Wizkid started recording music when he was 11 years old and went on to release a collaborative album with the Wonderful Five, a group he formed with a couple of his church friends. In 2009, Wizkid signed a new contract with Empire Mates Entertainment (E.M.E).

He became well-known after the release of “Holla at Your Boy,” the lead single from his debut studio album, Superstar (2011). From the Superstar album, singles included “Tease Me/Bad Guys,” “Don’t Dull,” “Love My Baby,” “Pakurumo,” and “Oluwa Lo Ni.” In September 2014, his self-titled second studio album, Ayo, was released. Six singles were released in support of the album: “Jaiye Jaiye,” “On Top Your Matter,” “One Question,” “Joy,” “Bombay,” and “Show You the Money.” After his contract with E.M.E expired, Wizkid left the company.

Wizkid rose to international prominence in 2016 after collaborating with Drake on the global hit “One Dance,” which charted at number one in 15 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. In March 2017, he authorized a multi-album deal with RCA Records. Sounds from the Other Side, his third studio album, was released in July 2017. It was mainly a Caribbean-influenced record and served as his major-label debut. Five singles were released in support of SFTOS: “Daddy Yo,” “Sweet Love,” “Come Closer,” “African Bad Gyal,” and “Naughty Ride.” Wizkid became the first Afrobeats artist to have his contribution to “One Dance” listed in the 2018 Guinness World Records.

He appeared on Beyoncé’s project The Lion King: The Gift in 2019 on the partnership “Brown Skin Girl,” which earned him a Grammy Award for Best Music Video. Made in Lagos, his fourth album was released in October 2020 to widespread commercial and critical acclaim.

With over 3.4 billion streams across all credits, Wizkid is currently the most-streamed Nigerian artist of all time on Spotify. With the majority of the credit going to One Dance, in which he was featured by Drake.

Wizkid’s accomplishments in the Nigerian music industry have received him several awards, including his first Grammy Award for Best Music Video as a lead artist on Beyoncé’s “Brown Skin Girl.” He has won three BET Awards, two Soul Train Awards, three Billboard Awards, two iHeartRadio Music Awards, and two MOBO Awards (4).
