Zoramthanga, the Chief Minister of Mizoram, is an Indian politician. He is the Mizo National Front (MNF) party’s president. He was the Chief Minister of Mizoram for two consecutive terms, from December 1998 to December 2008. He was second-in-command to Laldenga during the Mizo National Front’s secession movement, and he became the party’s leader after MNF was recognized as a political party following Laldenga’s death in 1990.

In 1987, he was appointed as Minister of Finance and Education to the Mizoram Legislative Assembly. In the 2008 Assembly elections, his party was defeated by the Indian National Congress. He ran in both the North and South Champhai constituencies and was defeated in both. On December 8, 2008, he tendered his resignation to Governor MM Lakhera and left office three days later. He has cited anti-incumbency as the reason for his party’s demise. He was re-elected Chief Minister after his party re-took power in the 2018 state assembly elections.

Zoramthanga Biography:

Zoramthanga was born on July 13, 1944, at Samthang village. His father’s name is Darphunga and his mother’s name is Vanhnuaichhingi. He is the second youngest of their eight children, which includes five brothers and three sisters.

In 1950, Zoramthanga started primary school in Samthang. After finishing class III, he attended South Khawbung middle school in 1954 and class VI in 1956. He relocated to Champhai in 1957 to attend Gandhi Memorial High School. In 1960, his family joined him at Champhai. In 1961, he graduated from high school. Because higher education was not available in Mizoram at the time, his family’s financial situation prevented him from continuing his education.

Instead, he became the principal of Champhai Vengthlang Middle School. With his salary savings and a lot of self-sufficiency, he went to Imphal, Manipur, and enrolled in Dhanamanjuri (D.M.) College of Arts for pre-university college (PUC, equivalent to higher secondary). He finished PUC in 1962 and went on to study B.A. He earned his bachelor’s degree in English with honors in 1966. He recalled his struggle and said:

During college, I collaborated in a stone quarry, chiseling and carrying boulder loads. To be more selective, I honed my way to graduation. I believe I earned enough money to support myself at the time.

Zoramthanga is a skilled debater. While in his B.A. class, he won an inter-college debating competition in New Delhi. He attends the Mizoram Presbyterian Church. On February 2, 1988, he married Roneihsangi. They have a son named Rothansiama and a daughter named Milari.

While in his final year of college, Zoramthanga finally joined the Mizo National Front freedom movement. When the MNF uprising began in 1966, he joined the guerrilla movement and went underground to the border with Bangladesh (then East Pakistan). He was hired as a secretary for the Run Bung Area, a position he held for three years. In 1969, all MNF cadres were dispatched to East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). Laldenga, the President, hired him as his Secretary. He was in this position for seven years. In 1979, he was boosted to the position of Vice President.

The MNF rebellion came to an end in 1986 when the Mizo Peace Accord was signed with the Government of India. MNF was promoted to the rank of the interim state governor. Zoramthanga was selected as a Cabinet Minister with Laldenga as the Chief Minister. Mizoram became a full state on February 20, 1987. By that time, MNF had established itself as a legitimate political party. In the same month, the Mizoram State Legislative Assembly held its first election, with MNF winning the majority of assembly seats, 24 out of 40. Zoramthanga was elected as a member of the Champhai constituency.

Zoramthanga was appointed Minister of Finance and Education in the first Mizoram State Legislative Assembly. When Laldenga died in 1990, he took over as President of the Mizo National Front. MNF lost to the Indian National Congress party in the 1993 election, but Zoramthanga won the Champhai constituency. In the legislative assembly, he was named Leader of the Opposition. When the assembly elections were held at the end of 1998, he led his party to victory and became Mizoram’s first Chief Minister.

In the 2003 election, he was re-elected as Chief Minister for the second time. However, his party was defeated in the 2008 Assembly elections by the Congress party. He was defeated in two Champhai constituencies, Champhai North and Champhai South. In the 2013 election, he and his party were soundly defeated by the Congress party. In 2018, his party regained the majority. On December 15, 2018, he was appointed as the Chief Minister of Mizoram from the Aizawl East-I constituency.
