Partha Pratim Sengupta has been appointed Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Chennai-based Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) With an impact from July 24. He was formerly the State Bank of India’s Deputy Managing Director and Chief Credit Officer (SBI).

He worked as a probation officer over the course of the last few decades, the first two decades of which were spent in separate geographies in retail, and currently has expertise in hands-on banking at a hands-on position in the corporate bank, the release says.

Sengupta takes over at a time when IOB is about to announce a turnaround in its activities. According to the release, the PSU lender made a respectable net profit in the March 2020 quarter after posting a net loss for the previous 18 quarters. IOB is expecting to be released from the RBI’s PCA system eventually, as the bank’s net non-performing assets (NPAs) have fallen below 6% in the last two years, and it aims to sustain profitability in the coming quarters.

Mr. Sengupta has stepped down as a non-executive director of Yes Bank. Yes Bank obtained equity of Rs 10,000 crore from the State Bank of India and other domestic financial institutions under a government-approved rehabilitation program. The State Bank of India now has a 48.2% interest in the private lender.
