Piyush Vedprakash Goyal was born on 13 June 1964. He is an Indian politician and a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He is a representative of the Upper House of the Parliament of India (Rajya Sabha) and the Deputy Leader of Rajya Sabha. He presently serves as the Minister of Railway as well as Commerce and Industry Minister of India. He was selected as a new railway minister after the reshuffle under the Modi government on September 3, 2017.

He held a supplementary charge of Minister of Commerce and Corporate Affairs twice in 2018 and 2019. Earlier he was Minister of State for Power, Coal, New & Renewable Energy (2014 – 2017), and Mines (2016 – 2017). Mr. Goyal’s administration has seen Indian Railways accomplish its best-ever safety record in 2018 – 2019. This was accomplished through holistic measures such as eradication of Unmanned Level Crossings (UMLCs) from the broad gauge network, production of safer coaches, etc.

He inspects the launch of the first indigenous semi‐high speed train Vande Bharat Express between Delhi and Varanasi. The Power, Coal and New & Renewable Energy ministries led transformative variations in India’s power sector. It includes the fast-tracking of electrification of the nearly 18,000 unelectrified villages in some of the distant and isolated parts of the country, the rollout of the most exhaustive power sector reform ever (UDAY), the success of the world’s largest LED bulb distribution program (UJALA) for energy efficiency, and big generation of sustainable energy through the world’s largest inexhaustible energy development program.

Other accomplishments comprise the eradication of coal scarcity to develop the energy security of India and the successful conduct of transparent e‐auctions of coal blocks. He also got the 4th Annual Carnot Prize in 2018 recognizing the pathbreaking conversions in India’s energy sector. During his 35 years long political career, Mr. Goyal has held many necessary positions at different heights in the world’s largest political party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and is in its National Executive. He has been the National officer of the Party. He was a representative of the Manifesto and Publicity Committees in the 2019 Indian General Elections.

He has had a bright academic record. He is a second rank holder Chartered Accountant in all India. He is also a second rank holder in Law in Mumbai University. He was a famous investment banker. He has advised top corporates on management programs and growth. He also served on the Board of India’s biggest financial bank – the State Bank of India and Bank of Baroda. He was also proposed by the Government of India to the Task Force for Interlinking of Rivers in 2002.

Vedprakash Goyal was the father of Piyush Goyal. He was Union Minister of Shipping and the National Officer of the BJP for over two decades. Chandrakanta Goyal was the mother of Piyush Goyal. She was elected thrice to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from Mumbai. Piyush Goyal is married to Seema. She is an active social worker. He has two children – Dhruv and Radhika.
