Rajiv Gauba is an Indian civil servant who has served as India’s Cabinet Secretary since 2019. He is a Jharkhand cadre Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the 1982 batch.

Rajiv Gauba was born on 15 August 1959, in Punjab, India. He is 61 years old. The name of the parents is not known.

Gauba has worked for the Government of India, the Government of Bihar, and the Government of Jharkhand in a variety of capacities, including Chief Secretary of Jharkhand, Resident Commissioner of Jharkhand, and district magistrate and collector of Gaya, Nalanda, and Muzzaffarpur districts in the Jharkhand government—prior to Bihar’s bifurcation—and as the Union Home Secretary, Union Urbanian Minister.

Gauba has worked for the International Monetary Fund as an advisor to an executive director.

On January 20, 2015, Gauba was named Chief Secretary of the Government of Jharkhand by the Chief Minister of Jharkhand. When Gauba was appointed as a secretary in the Indian government, he relinquished his role as chief secretary.

On June 22, 2017, the ACC named Gauba as the Union Home Secretary, succeeding Rajiv Mehrishi. He served as an officer on special duty in the rank of secretary until Mehrishi’s retirement on August 31, 2017, when he formally assumed command.

Gauba was appointed Cabinet Secretary in August of this year. On August 22, 2019, he handed over the role of Home Secretary to Ajay Kumar Bhalla (IAS).
