The Seattle Sounders FC is an MLS (Major League Soccer) team founded in 2009 and competing in the Western Conference. Although the Seattle Sounders of the North American Soccer League were founded in 1974, their name has been around since then. Coaches John Best and Jimmy Gabriel, who led the team from 1974 to 1976, and Jimmy McAlister, a 19-year-old from West Seattle who was named the NASL Rookie of the Year in 1977, established the league’s first reserve program, which produced players like Jimmy McAlister and Mark Peterson, the team’s all-time leading goal scorer from Tacoma.

The Sounders twice made it to the Soccer Bowl, the North American Soccer League’s championship game, but both times they fell to the Cosmos. When Hinton took over as head coach and Frank Coluccio became owner, it was their finest season ever. With a league-high 25 victories, forward Roger Davies (born 1950) earned the league’s MVP award and Hinton was voted the team’s best coach. That season, the NASL and the Sounders were at their zenith of popularity.

Players’ wages and travel expenses pushed the team farther into debt. As the number of teams shrank from 24 to 13, so did attendance over the following two years. After the 1982 season, Coluccio put the squad up for sale. It was September 6, 1983, when the Sounders collapsed, and the league went out of operation the next year.

In order to get a job, numerous Sounders players opted to join the Tacoma Stars of the MIL. The Tacoma Dome was the home of the Stars from 1983 to 1985. From 1985 until 1990, Hinton coached them, including the 1987 championship series, where they drew an indoor-soccer record crowd of 21,728 for Game 7 against the Dallas Sidekicks. Costs outstripped revenue in the MISL, just like in the North American Soccer League. When the Stars and their league disbanded in 1992, so did their franchise.

From 1984 through 1990, a team was known as FC Seattle and later FC Seattle Storm was in existence. Soccer team names that include the acronym FC include the abbreviation “Football Club,” which stands for “Football Club.” Former Sounder Tommy Jenkins (b. 1947) and Bellevue-based entrepreneur Bud Greer (b. 1936) initially supported FC Seattle and coached it in friendly matches against visiting national and international clubs.
