Steven Peter Devereux Smith is an international cricket player and former captain of the Australian national team. In domestic cricket, he plays for New South Wales.

Despite being selected for Australia as a right-arm leg spinner at first, Smith later mainly played as a batsman. After appearing in five matches from 2010 to 2011, he was recalled to the Australian team in 2013, and took over the captaincy from Michael Clarke in late 2015, after which he batted primarily at number three or four.

Steve Smith was born in Kogarah, Sydney, on June 2, 1989, to an Australian father, Peter, who holds a chemistry degree, and an English mother, Gillian. Smith attended Menai High School before leaving at the age of 17 to play cricket in England for Sevenoaks Vine in the Kent Cricket League.

Career:

Smith competed for Australia in the 2008 Under-19 Cricket World Cup, which was held in Malaysia. On January 25, 2008, Smith made his first-class debut for New South Wales against Western Australia at the SCG. As New South Wales defeated Western Australia outright, he scored 33 runs in his sole innings.  He was a member of the New South Wales Twenty20 Champions League-winning team in 2009.

Royal Challengers Bangalore acquired Smith for the 2010 Indian Premier League season. Smith is a right-handed batsman with an unconventional technique that has gotten him a lot of attention. In February 2016, the team returned to New Zealand for two Tests. Smith appeared to be in good form, scoring 71, 138, and 53* in the three innings he batted in as Australia won 2–0.

Smith continued to struggle with form early in the T20 World Cup 2016, which was held in India, before scoring 61 against Pakistan in a must-win pool match for Australia. Smith went on to score only two runs against India, as Australia was knocked out of the tournament. It was assumed that Smith was given out inaccurately, having clean missed a ball that the umpires deemed to have been edged.

2016 Sri Lanka Tour

The Australian Cricket Team was then led by Smith on a tour of Sri Lanka. The Australians were thrashed 3–0 in the three-match Test series. Smith was Australia’s leading run-scorer in the series, with 247 runs at an average of 41, including a century and a fifty. Smith averaged more than 40 in the first two ODIs of the following series before leaving early for a rest.

South Africa ODI Tour 2016

Australia’s poor form continued into their ODI tour of South Africa. They lost the first three matches, owing largely to the inability of their young bowling attack to contain a strong South African batting line-up. Smith was underwhelming in the first two ODIs before scoring 108 off 107 balls in the third match to help Australia to a total of 371. Despite the large total, South Africa chased it down in the 50th over. Australia was defeated 5–0 in the five-match series.
