Jagmeet Singh Jimmy Dhaliwal is a Canadian politician who has been the New Democratic Party’s leader since 2017.
Jagmeet Singh Biography:
Jagmeet Singh was born in Scarborough, Ontario, on January 2, 1979, to Harmeet Kaur and Jagtaran Singh, both immigrants from the Indian state of Punjab. His mother is from Ghudani Khurd in Punjab’s Ludhiana region, and his father hails from Barnala’s Thikriwala.
Singh earned a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in biology from Western University in 2001 and a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from York University’s Osgoode Hall Law School in 2005. In 2006, he was admitted to the Law Society of Upper Canada’s Bar.
Singh has two younger siblings, Gurratan and Manjot, who were both born in Newfoundland when the family was there. In the 2018 Ontario election, Gurratan Singh was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, representing the Brampton East constituency.
Singh began his legal career as a criminal defense attorney. His political career began in 2011, when he ran in the federal riding of Bramalea—Gore—Malton, which was narrowly won by Conservative opponent Bal Gosal; he later became a member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) in the overlapping provincial riding. He was appointed deputy leader of the Ontario New Democratic Party in 2015 and served under leader Andrea Horwath until 2017. Following a leadership review that resulted in a leadership election to replace Tom Mulcair, Singh announced his candidacy for the federal New Democratic Party leadership. Singh was elected leader on October 1, 2017, with a 53.8 percent first-round vote in a field of four. The New Democrats, led by Singh, won 24 seats in the 2019 federal election, moving them from third to fourth place.
Singh became the first person of a visible minority group to lead a major Canadian federal political party on a permanent basis, and the second overall after the former interim leader of the Bloc Québécois, Vivian Barbot. Singh is also the first turban-wearing Indian and Sikh to serve as an Ontario provincial legislator. He has received widespread acclaim in Canadian media for his fashion and style sense. Singh is an ideological progressive as well as a social democrat. He favors raising the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour, decriminalizing all drug possession, and eliminating several tax breaks available to the wealthiest Americans.
Before entering politics, Jagmeet Singh worked as a criminal defense lawyer in the Greater Toronto Area. Singh’s political career began when he decided to run for Member of Parliament as the NDP candidate in the Bramalea—Gore—Malton riding in the 2011 federal election.
On October 1, 2017, Singh was chosen leader of the federal NDP in a leadership election, winning with 53.8 percent of the vote on the first ballot. Singh describes himself as a social democrat and a progressive.
Singh believes that like Portugal did in 2001, decriminalizing the purchase, possession, and consumption of psychoactive drugs for personal use is a good idea. According to Singh’s economic strategy, “millions of Canadians live in poverty.”
Singh supports a progressive tax system that eliminates various tax breaks for the wealthiest 1% of the population and redirects the funds to low-income seniors, workers, and disabled Canadians.
Provincial politics (2011–2017)
Singh ran as the NDP candidate in the overlapping provincial riding in the 2011 Ontario election, defeating Liberal incumbent Kuldip Kular by 2,277 votes. Singh was the first New Democrat elected to represent Peel Region, as well as the first MPP to wear a turban. Singh was selected as the NDP critic for the attorney general and consumer services portfolios in Ontario’s 40th legislature. He was also the deputy house leader for his party.
Singh has requested that the provincial government draft legislation to strengthen Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit and has called for greater police accountability (SIU). In 2011, he chastised the attorney general following the release of a report by the ombudsman, André Marin, which found that the region had undermined the SIU. “The ministry’s comprehensive failure to address concerns about the SIU and give it a proper mandate is simply unacceptable,” Singh said, “and I anticipate immediate action from the new Attorney General.”
Singh presented a private member’s bill called “An Act to Amend the Insurance Act” in March 2012 to address high auto insurance rates. This bill would have prohibited the industry from basing insurance rates on geographic location. The bill failed to pass the second reading after receiving numerous complaints about raising rates in rural and northern Ontario.
Singh introduced a private member’s bill called “An Act to Amend the Consumer Protection Act, 2002” in May 2012 to address high fees on international money transfers. When the legislature adjourned in September 2012, the bill died on the order paper.
Singh introduced a motion in March 2013 requesting that the Liberal government reduce auto insurance premiums by 15%. Singh’s motion was approved by the legislature, and the 15% cut was to be incorporated into the Liberal Government’s 2013 Provincial budget.
Singh introduced legislation in December 2013 to have the month of April recognized as Sikh Heritage Month in the province of Ontario. The act was passed by the legislature.
