Twice Sana is a South Korean-based Japanese Singer. Sana was born in Tennoji-ku, Osaka, Osaka Prefecture, Japan, on December 29, 1996. In her home, she is the only child. Girls’ Generation and other K-pop groups encouraged her to pursue a career as a singer and dancer. She can speak Korean and basic English in addition to her native Japanese.

Sana started her EXPG training in Osaka in 2009, with the aim of becoming a singer in Japan rather than South Korea. She was discovered by a JYP Entertainment employee at a shopping mall during her middle school years and asked to appear in the annual JYP Japan audition the next day.

Sana was accepted into the JYPE trainee program in South Korea in April 2012 after passing the audition. Until making her debut with Twice, she spent over three years training with JYP. Sana was supposed to join a new JYP girl group at one stage. This latest project, though, was cancelled, and the group did not make its debut. Sana has learned Korean since coming to South Korea and is fluent in the language.

Sana competed in the music survival show Sixteen in 2015, a reality television program that aimed to find Twice’s, founding members. Sana was chosen as one of the nine members of the newly created girl group from among the sixteen contestants.

In October 2015, she made her Twice debut with the single “Like Ooh-Ahh” from their debut extended play The Story Begins. Sana is well-known for her vivacious and upbeat style, which has earned her praise both in South Korea and abroad. Her fame, along with that of fellow Japanese members Momo and Mina, has been credited with strengthening Japan-South Korea ties.

Sana was voted the 17th most successful idol in South Korea in Gallup Korea’s annual music survey for 2018, making her the highest-ranking Japanese person in the poll. In the 2019 poll, she was ranked 15th. Sana was also named the most successful female K-pop singer in a survey of South Korean soldiers completing mandatory military service in 2019. She has done promotional work for a variety of brands and items outside of Twice.
