In 1975, 1976, and 1980, he received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles. The Electronics and Technology Division of TRW, Inc., a military communications defence contractor currently owned by Northrop-Grumman, employed him from 1980 to 1985 in a variety of technical and managerial capacities. For the last 30 years, he has been a professor at the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at UCLA.
He has also worked as an adjunct professor at the University of California, Irvine’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science since 2003. Broadcom Corporation, a worldwide pioneer in the provision of semiconductor solutions for wired and wireless communications, was established by him in 1991 with his co-founders. As Chief Technology Officer of Broadcom, Henry took a leave of absence from UCLA in 1995 and joined the company full-time (CTO). Broadcom was bought by Avago Technologies Limited in 2016, and the company was renamed Broadcom Inc. The Samueli’s also own the San Diego Gulls of the American Hockey League (AHL), which is the Ducks’ minor-league club in San Diego and plays in the same league as the Ducks.
Susan and Henry have been able to support a wide range of worthy charitable groups as a result of the success of Broadcom Technologies. Immediately after Broadcom’s first public offering in 1998, the company established the Samueli Foundation, which has donated more than $600 million to date, largely in the areas of STEM education, integrative health, youth and social services, and Jewish cultural preservation. In 2012, they became members of the Giving Pledge, which was founded by Warren Buffett and Bill and Melinda Gates and whose members commit to donating the bulk of their fortune to charities in perpetuity.
Susan served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Orangewood Children’s Foundation, a leading provider of foster youth services in Orange County, Calif., and as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Samueli Academy, a cutting-edge public charter high school in Santa Ana, Calif., that focuses on project-based STEM learning for students from the community, underserved populations, and foster children.
