Susan Samueli was born and reared in the California city of Los Angeles. In 1972, she graduated with a B.A. in Mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley. While at IBM, she worked as a software programmer in the Federal Systems Division, Westlake Village, Calif., and then as a Systems Engineer in the National Marketing Division, Los Angeles, where she provided technical marketing and sales support for IBM’s mid-range computer systems.
She retired from IBM in 1985 after 37 years of service. Following her departure from IBM in 1985, she dedicated her time and attention to raising her children, during which time she acquired a strong interest in integrative health care and pursued studies in the fields of nutrition, homoeopathy, and Chinese herbs. Subsequently, in 1993, Susan got a Ph.D. in nutrition from the American Holistic College of Nutrition, and a certificate in homoeopathy from the British Institute of Homeopathy, both of which she acquired in 1994.
Henry Samueli was born in Buffalo, New York, and grew up in Los Angeles, where he now resides. In 1975, 1976, and 1980, he received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles. The Electronics and Technology Division of TRW, Inc., a military communications defence contractor currently owned by Northrop-Grumman, employed him from 1980 to 1985 in a variety of technical and managerial capacities. For the last 30 years, he has been a professor at the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at UCLA.
He has also worked as an adjunct professor at the University of California, Irvine’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science since 2003. Broadcom Corporation, a worldwide pioneer in the provision of semiconductor solutions for wired and wireless communications, was established by him in 1991 with his co-founders. As Chief Technology Officer of Broadcom, Henry took a leave of absence from UCLA in 1995 and joined the company full-time (CTO). Broadcom was bought by Avago Technologies Limited in 2016, and the company was renamed Broadcom Inc. Henry left his position as Chief Technology Officer of Broadcom in 2018 and is currently the Chairman of the Board of Broadcom Inc.
After taking over administration of the Honda Center sports and entertainment complex in Anaheim, California, Susan and Henry went on to acquire the Anaheim Ducks National Hockey League (NHL) club from the Walt Disney Company in 2005. Henry is on the Executive Committee of the NHL Board of Governors and is a former NHL player. The Samueli’s also own the San Diego Gulls of the American Hockey League (AHL), which is the Ducks’ minor-league club in San Diego and plays in the same league as the Ducks.
Susan and Henry have been able to support a wide range of worthy charitable groups as a result of the success of Broadcom Technologies. Immediately after Broadcom’s first public offering in 1998, the company established the Samueli Foundation, which has donated more than $600 million to date, largely in the areas of STEM education, integrative health, youth and social services, and Jewish cultural preservation. In 2012, they became members of the Giving Pledge, which was founded by Warren Buffett and Bill and Melinda Gates and whose members commit to donating the bulk of their fortune to charities in perpetuity.
Susan served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Orangewood Children’s Foundation, a leading provider of foster youth services in Orange County, Calif., and as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Samueli Academy, a cutting-edge public charter high school in Santa Ana, Calif., that focuses on project-based STEM learning for students from the community, underserved populations, and foster children. UC Irvine’s Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute, which offers education, research, and clinical treatment that are based on integrative methods and stress whole-person healing and health, has appointed her to its Advisory Board.
Henry serves on the Dean’s Advisory Boards of both the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science at UCLA and the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of California, Irvine. Susan and Henry are both members of the Advisory Board of the Susan and Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences at the University of California, Irvine.
