Minister Kamaraj is a member of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) political party in India. He has been a member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly since 2011, representing the Nannilam constituency, and is the Tamil Nadu Government’s Minister for Food. Kamaraj was chosen by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to succeed Budhichandhiran as Minister for Food in the Government of Tamil Nadu in November 2011, the third cabinet reshuffle in a five-month period.

Kamaraj was named Minister of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments as well as Minister of Food in January 2015. P. Chendur Pandian, who was seriously ill, was relieved of this extra responsibility.

Kamaraj was one of three AIADMK ministers included in a First Information Report filed by police in April 2017 after charges of obstructing officials performing income tax raids. He and Udumalai K. Radhakrishnan were accused of doing so at the home of C. Vijayabhaskar, the Minister of Health. The Supreme Court of India chastised the Tamil Nadu government for failing to investigate a land scam case in which Kamaraj was allegedly involved the next month.
