Conrad Kongkal Sangma is an Indian politician who has served as Meghalaya’s 12th and current Chief Minister since 2018. He was born on January 27, 1978, and has held this position since 2018. He belongs to the National People’s Party as a party member. His father, P. A. Sangma, served in the role of Chief Minister and Speaker of the Lok Sabha in the past. In addition to that, he served as the Member of Parliament for Tura from 2016 to 2018. Since 2018, he has represented the South Tura seat, while from 2008 to 2013, he served in the Selella constituency.

During 2008 and 2009, Sangma also served as the Minister of Finance, Power, and Tourism for Meghalaya. In the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, he was a previous opposition leader at one point. In addition to that, he led the Nationalist Youth Congress as its National President. After finishing his education, Sangma began his political career in the late 1990s, working as the campaign manager for his father, P. A. Sangma, for the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). During this time, Sangma was elected as a member of the NCP.

In 2004, he ran for office and lost his first election by 182 votes. He was first elected to the State Assembly and his brother James as NCP members in the 2008 state elections. Later, he held several important portfolios in the state cabinet, including Finance, Power, Tourism, GAD, and IT, and he presented his first annual budget for Meghalaya within ten days of debuting as a minister. James was also elected to the State Assembly alongside him as an NCP member in those elections.

Sangma served as the Opposition Leader in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly from 2009 to 2013. He served in this capacity for a total of five years. Following the passing of his father earlier that year, he won the election for the position of national President of the National People’s Party (NPP) in March of that same year. During the by-election for the Lok Sabha in May of that year, he ran as a candidate from the Tura constituency and won by a record margin of 1.92 lakh votes.

At the 2018 election for the Meghalaya legislative assembly, Sangma’s party, the National People’s Party (NPP), won 19 seats, placing it in second place behind the Indian National Congress (INC). Because the state’s minimum need for a functioning administration is thirty seats, the New People’s Party (NPP) formed coalitions with several other regional parties to increase its total to thirty-four. After that, Sangma presented a letter of support signed by all 34 members of the legislative assembly to the Governor of Meghalaya, Ganga Prasad, to make his claim to become the state’s next Leader.

This includes 19 votes from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), six votes from the United Democratic Party (UDP), four votes from the People’s Democratic Front, two votes each from the Hill State People’s Democratic Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party, as well as one vote from an independent candidate, who was subsequently proclaimed the winner of the race for Chief Minister. On March 6, he took over for his predecessor, Mukul Sangma, who is not related to him in any way. He was sworn in. He ran for the vacant South Tura seat in the by-election that took place in August 2018, and he received 13,656 votes.

By a margin of more than 8,400 votes, Sangma was victorious over his closest competitor for Congress, Charlotte W. Momin. On March 7, 2023, he won re-election as Chief Minister of Meghalaya, making this his second consecutive term. Amara, who was born in the year 2011, and Katelyn, who was born in 2017, are Sangma and Mehtab Chandee’s two kids. Sangma married Mehtab Chandee on May 29, 2009, and she is a medical doctor.

Iron Maiden is a band that Conrad Sangma enjoys listening to and playing the electric guitar while also being a fan. In May 2020, he posted a video on Instagram of himself performing the song “Wasted Years” by Iron Maiden. As a result of this, he gained a tremendous amount of attention. On Monday, the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad K. Sangma, said that 40,500 young people in the state now depend on narcotic substances; these young people must be treated with empathy to develop into responsible citizens.

Sangma brought attention to the state’s ambitious Drug Reduction, Elimination, and Action Mission (DREAM), a program with a budget of Rs 10 crore to eliminate drug misuse by leveraging the engagement of communities and religious organizations and coordinating strategies. On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Drug Abuse and Trafficking in Illicit Drugs, the Chief Minister delivered a speech at the state-level awareness campaign.

The effort done by the police department, which over the last few months has resulted in the arrest of multiple drug traffickers and the seizure of consignments with a total value of crores of rupees, was praised by the chief minister. He complimented the police department for setting a new national record by organizing 1,263 drug awareness programs as part of Nasha Mukht Bharat Pakhwada, a program run by the federal government to combat the consumption of illegal drugs.

The situation in the region near the international border is under control, according to the Chief Minister of the state, Conrad K. Sangma, and the state administration is keeping a careful check on the evolution of the situation. Pradip Kumar, the inspector general of the BSF Meghalaya Frontier, said to PTI that in the last few days, we could identify the smugglers and capture a variety of commodities intended to be trafficked into Bangladesh. Consequently, they rallied a crowd to launch an assault on the outpost, which compelled the BSF to take defensive measures by shooting into the air.

Conrad Sangma, the National President of the National People’s Party (NPP) and the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, said that the political dynamics of the District Council are distinct and that the government does not intervene in the workings of the District Council. This statement came as the Congress and the National People’s Party (NPP) inched closer to one another in Meghalaya. To overthrow a Meghalaya tribal council headed by the United Democratic Party (UDP), Congress provided help to the National People’s Party (NPP), an ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Pyniaid Sing Syiem, who had previously served as a member of the district council (MDC) of the NPP, was on Tuesday overwhelmingly chosen as the new chief executive member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) in Meghalaya. This council is responsible for governing the Khasi Hills autonomous district in Meghalaya. On the first day of the Summer (Budget) session of the council on Monday, UDP leader Titosstarwell Chyne was defeated in the floor test, and his Executive Committee was brought to its knees when they were defeated in a vote of no confidence that NPP MDC Bajop Pyngrope brought up.

In response to a recent political development in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council, Sangma said that the political dynamics of the District Council are distinct from those of the state Government. He explained that this is because the state Government does not meddle in the operations of the District Council. When Sangma was questioned about the dissatisfaction of his coalition partner, the UDP, that it was not a seamless transition, he responded by saying that there are obstacles and challenges but that he refuses to intervene in the process.

The United Democratic Party (UPD), an alliance partner in the MDA Government, is dissatisfied with this intimacy between Congress and the NPP. Gabriel Wahlang, a member of the Meghalaya Congress and the member designate of the Nongstoi Constituency, said that the Indian National Congress would only support the National People’s Party (NPP) in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and not in the MDA-II administration that runs the NPP runs in the state.

It is essential for the confidence building of the people of Manipur. As a result, steps should be taken by the Government of India, including a visit by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, along with the Home Minister of India, Amit Shah, and if possible, other political leaders also to the state of Manipur, and to appeal to the people that we must look towards peace, and ensure that the state is once again back to normalcy.

Sangma said this after participating in an all-party conference on June 24 in New Delhi to review the situation in the troubled Northeast state. The meeting was called by the home minister, Amit Shah. According to Sangma, all the political parties have voiced their concern over the current situation and have encouraged the Central Government to take any actions required to restore peace and normality to the state ripped apart by conflict.

After the meeting, Sangma said that he had conducted a review meeting with all concerned departments, such as the Revenue and Disaster Management, Food & Civil Supplies, and deputy commissioners of different districts keeping in mind that the monsoon has begun and the state is seeing heavy rainfall and heavy winds. He said this meeting was held because the monsoon had already started, and the state saw heavy rain and winds. It turned out to be a productive gathering.
