Ruskin Bond is an Indian Author. In 1992, he received the Sahitya Akademi Award for his novel in English, Our Trees Still Grow in Dehra. Bond has authored a large number of short stories, essays, novels, and children’s books.
His debut novel, The Room on the Roof, was written at the age of seventeen and published at the age of twenty-one. It was inspired in part by his experiences in Dehradun when he lived in a small leased room on the roof with his pals.
His earliest works were created with no intention of being read by a specific audience. On a publisher’s request for a children’s narrative, his first children’s book, Angry River, released in the 1970s, had its prose toned down. Bond’s art reflects his Anglo-Indian experiences as well as the shifting political, social, and cultural features of India, having lived through the colonial, postcolonial, and post-independence periods of the country.
Bond dabbled with several genres over his 50-year career as a writer, including fiction, short tales, novellas, and autobiographical works. Later, he experimented with nonfiction, romance, and children’s novels. Bond enjoys Richmal Crompton’s Just William, Charles Hamilton’s Billy Bunter, and classics such as Alice in Wonderland and works by Charles Dickens and Mark Twain.
Bond’s historical novel A Flight of Pigeons was the inspiration for the 1978 Bollywood film Junoon. Shashi Kapoor produced the film, which was directed by Shyam Benegal. Ek Tha Rusty, a Doordarshan TV series, is based on the Rusty tales.
The Night Train at Deoli, Time Stops at Shamli, and Our Trees Still Grow in Dehra are among the stories that have been included in the Indian school curriculum. Vishal Bhardwaj, a Bollywood director, created a film based on his popular children’s story The Blue Umbrella in 2005. The film was named Best Children’s Film at the National Film Awards.
In 2011, Ruskin Bond made his big-screen debut in Vishal Bhardwaj’s film 7 Khoon Maaf, which was based on his short tale Susanna’s Seven Husbands. In the film, Bond plays a Bishop, while Priyanka Chopra plays the title character. Bond had previously worked with Bharadwaj on the film The Blue Umbrella, which was based on one of his writings as well.
