Richard Tyler Blevins (born June 5, 1991) is an American video game streamer and professional gamer best known by his online persona Ninja.
Blevins got his start streaming by joining many esports teams in competitive Halo 3 games, and he grew in popularity when he began playing Fortnite Battle Royale in late 2017. Blevins’ rise to prominence in the mass media began in March 2018, when he streamed Fortnite with Drake, Travis Scott, and JuJu Smith-Schuster, smashing Twitch’s peak viewer count record. As of April 2021, Blevins has over 16 million followers, making him the most popular Twitch channel.
Richard Tyler Blevins was born in the United States on June 5, 1991, to Welsh-American parents. He was born in the Detroit area but relocated to the Chicago suburbs with his family when he was a kid. He went to Grayslake Central High School and played soccer there. Following graduation, he chose to pursue a career in video games, competing in tournaments, joining professional associations, and live streaming his games.
In 2009, Blevins started playing Halo 3 professionally. Cloud9, Renegades, Team Liquid, and, most recently, Luminosity Gaming were among the teams he played for. In 2011, Blevins started streaming. He started with H1Z1 before moving on to PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. In 2017, he joined Luminosity Gaming as a Halo player, then moved on to H1Z1, and finally PUBG, where he won the PUBG Gamescom Invitational Squads classification in August 2017.
Shortly after the PUBG Gamescom Invitational, Blevins started streaming the newly announced Fortnite Battle Royale. Over the late 2017/early 2018 timeframe, his viewership began to rise in tandem with the game’s popularity. By March 2018, his Twitch followers had risen from 500,000 in September 2017 to over 2 million.
While playing Fortnite with Drake, Travis Scott, and JuJu Smith-Schuster in March 2018, Blevins set the Twitch record for the highest concurrent audience on an individual stream (outside of tournament events) with 635,000 viewers. Epic Games, the creators of Fortnite, were inspired by this stream to host a charitable pro-am event in Fortnite in June of that year, with prominent streamers like Blevins matched with famous celebrities; Blevins won the event with electronic musician Marshmello. During his event Ninja Vegas 2018, in April 2018, he broke his own viewing record, attracting a total of 667,000 live viewers.
In June 2018, Blevins collaborated with Red Bull Esports and hosted a special Fortnite event in Chicago, the Red Bull Rise Till Dawn, where players could challenge him.
Blevins’ increase in Twitch popularity is thought to be linked to the success of Fortnite Battle Royale in a synergistic way. In December 2018, Blevins estimated he received close to US$10 million in 2018, while Epic Games posted revenue of over US$3 billion for the year, owing largely to Fortnite. Epic introduced a Ninja-based cosmetic skin to the game in January 2020 as the first part of a “Icon Series” for other real-life personalities associated with Fortnite to recognise Blevins’ contribution to the game’s success.
Blevins was chastised in November 2018 after wrongly accusing IcyFive, a Fortnite competitor, of stream sniping. Blevins’ teammate, DrLupo, told him to look out for a “emote” after IcyFive eliminated him, which IcyFive did. Blevins saw this as evidence that IcyFive was stream sniping and reported him right away. After reporting IcyFive, Blevins claimed that he would “go out of his way” to ensure that IcyFive was suspended, and that if IcyFive quit the game immediately, he would not report him, despite the fact that he had already been recorded. IcyFive did not do so because he was not watching the stream.
Blevins thought IcyFive was ignoring him and pulled out his phone, ostensibly in an effort to contact Epic Games directly. IcyFive said he did not stream snipe Blevins and provided evidence in the form of a screenshot. DrLupo later claimed that he did not believe IcyFive stream sniped Blevins, claiming that using an emote in response to a rise in spectator count after elimination was a common occurrence and that he did not support Blevins’ behavior, comparing them to a rant. On Twitter, Blevins later apologized to IcyFive, accusing him of “playing the victim” and “milking” the incident, calling him “naive” for thinking players will be suspended solely on his word.
