Oggy and the Cockroaches (Oggy et les Cafards in French) is a French comic animated television series created by Jean-Yves Raimbaud and produced by Gaumont Multimedia (first two seasons) and Xilam Animation (third season onwards). The show uses silent comedy, with characters either not speaking or making incomprehensible vocalizations and gestures; the Indian version has Hindi dialogue dubbed over the animation. The show first aired on France 3 in September 1998, and it went on to become a worldwide sensation.

The series is set to be revived as The New Adventures of Oggy in September 2020, with Oggy caring for Piya, a seven-year-old female elephant from India. The original series will be renewed with additional episodes in January 2021.

Oggy is a light blue cat with green eyes, a red nose, a grey stomach, and white feet. When he isn’t chasing cockroaches, Oggy normally spends his time watching TV or doing housework. Despite the cockroaches’ incessant mayhem, Oggy has developed a love–hate connection with them after spending so much time with them. Oggy kills the cockroaches in “The Ghost Hunter”/”Ghost Hunting,” but is tormented by the spirits. When he is alone in his house, he starts to miss the cockroaches and their antics (as seen in the episodes “Priceless Roaches” and “So Lonely”/”Alone at Last”), which is followed by nothing noteworthy happening in his life. In the Season 1 episodes “The Rise & the Fall”/”Vertigo,” he also has a fear of heights, however in “The Lighthouse Keeper,” Jack has a morbid fear of heights instead of him.

Dee Dee has a dark blue body, an orange head, a black nose, green eyes, and black feet, and is the youngest cockroach. Always hungry, his appetite can spiral out of control, leading to the consumption of larger animals or otherwise inedible objects (such as hyenas in one case and an insect in another due to the effects of a poisonous mushroom; other examples include the fish on the wallpaper in “Oggy’s Clone”/”Oggy’s Costume” and a clownfish in “Scuba Diving”). He is well-known for his love of opera. As seen in “Caught in a Trap”/”High Security Fridge,” his feet are sometimes seen to be so foul-smelling that the liquid they generate is toxic and may melt objects.

With a silver body, green head, black nose, pink eyes (originally red), and black feet, Marky is the tallest and middle cockroach. Marky, like Dee Dee and Joey, used to like getting into mischief, but as the series progressed, he became more laid-back. In the majority of episodes, he is paired with Dee Dee. He enjoys dating puppets and reading books, and as shown in “It’s a Small World”/”Itsy-Bitsy Oggy,” he has horrible breath. In the episode “Teleportation,” while he is trapped in ice cubes, his eyes turn crimson once more.

Joey, a cockroach with a purple-pink body, a pink right eye (originally red), a yellow left eye, lavender head, black nose, and black feet, was born on June 15, 1991. Despite being the shortest roach in the gang, he is the smartest, always being the brain behind the ideas. However, he is occasionally forced to go alone because Marky and Dee Dee often believe his plans are ridiculous. He craves money, yet his attempts are always in vain, and he is frequently swatted or beaten.

Jack is an olive-colored cat with yellow eyes, a red nose, a pale pink stomach, and white toes. He is, in comparison to Oggy, more irritable, angry, and haughty. He enjoys constructing large gear, such as roach-catching devices, and is fascinated by physics and chemistry (that is, the more explosive parts of it). Jack spends much of his time at Oggy’s house and owns a green jeep that he and Oggy use to go on adventures, to the beach, and to go fishing. He is occasionally seen attempting to propose to Monica, but the cockroaches always stop him. Jack and Monica appear to have a baby together in one episode (“Don’t Rock the Cradle”/”Oggy the Babysitter”) and ask Oggy to babysit their child. In “Just Married,” Jack plans to marry, but the wedding is called off owing to roaches.
