Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury was born on April 2, 1956, in Berhampore, Murshidabad District, West Bengal, to Niranjan and Saroja Bala Chowdhury. He went to Berhampore’s I.C. Institute to study.


On September 15, 1987, Chowdhury married Arpita Chowdhury. Shreyashi, their only child, died in October 2006 at the age of 18 after falling off the terrace of their apartment. It was believed by the police that it was a suicide. Arpita passed away on January 9, 2019. Adhir Chowdhury announced his marriage to Atasi Chattopadhyaya Chowdhury in his affidavit for the 2019 Indian general election. Adhir was said to have adopted her daughter by the media.

During Rajiv Gandhi’s presidency, Chowdhury joined the Indian National Congress. He ran for the West Bengal Legislative Assembly from the Nabagram constituency in 1991. During the voting, he was pursued by 300 Communist Party of India members and held hostage by the party’s candidate. Chowdhury was defeated by 1,401 votes. He was returned from the same district in 1996. Chowdhury received 76,852 votes, winning by a margin of around 20,329 votes.

Chowdhury ran for the Berhampore constituency in the Indian general election of 1999. He beat his closest opponent, sitting MP Pramothes Mukherjee of the Revolutionary Socialist Party, by 95,391 votes. He was elected Congress president for the Murshidabad district as a result of his results. He sat on the Committee on Information Technology, the Railway Convention Committee, and the Committee to Review the Rate of Dividend Payable by the Railway Undertaking to the General Revenues between 1999 and 2000.


He was a member of the Ministry of External Affairs’ Consultative Committee from 2000 to 2004. In Murshidabad, the Congress party secured 23 out of 33 zilla parishad seats, 13 out of 26 panchayat samitis, and 104 out of 254 village councils in 2003 under Chowdhury’s leadership.

On February 10, 2014, he was elected president of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress. He was elected as the Congress leader in the Lok Sabha in June 2019. According to NDTV, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury was appointed after the party was unable to persuade Rahul Gandhi.

Chowdhury was appointed chairman of the Seventeenth Lok Sabha Committee on Public Accounts on July 26, 2019. Every year, the Public Accounts Committee is formed under Rule 308 of the Lok Sabha Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business.

Following the death of Somen Mitra, the previous president of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee, on September 9, 2020, Chowdhury was appointed president of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee.
