After making her debut during fashion week as an exclusive in the Saint Laurent S/S 17 show, Akech concluded both the Saint Laurent F/W 17 and S/S 18 shows. Akech made her runway debut during fashion week. She was awarded the title of “Model of the Year” by models.com in 2018, an accolade she received again the following year. Although Akech was born in Sudan (in a region that would subsequently be incorporated into South Sudan), he spent his childhood in the Kenyan town of Kakuma. When she and her mother fled South Sudan for Adelaide, Australia, from Kenya, she was seven years old. They had fled as refugees from South Sudan. Akech is the youngest of five children. In Adelaide, Akech was better known as “Mary” since her real name was tricky for Australian educators to pronounce.

The fashion business was first brought to Akech’s attention by her family. However, she began her career as a model when she was 16 years old, and she did so by signing with her mother’s agency, Chadwick Models, located in Sydney, Australia. This was even though she had been scouted by numerous local modeling agencies when she was 13 and 14. She chooses to go by her real name, Adut when working in the fashion business.

Her aunt was the one who organized the local fashion show that was Akech’s first time walking the catwalk. After that, she participated in the Melbourne Fashion Week, where she was photographed for a Saint Laurent casting that would later take place at the Paris Fashion Week. Back in Adelaide following Melbourne Fashion Week, she received a call from her agency confirming her for the Saint Laurent show. The next day, she caught a trip to Paris, where she made her big Fashion Week debut at the Saint Laurent S/S 17 show and signed with Elite Model Management in Paris.

Since then, Akech has done four campaigns and closed two shows for Saint Laurent, one campaign and two shows for Valentino, one campaign for Zara, and one campaign for Moschino, as well as walked for Alexander McQueen, Givenchy, Kenzo, Prada, Lanvin, Loewe, Miu Miu, Acne Studios, Tom Ford, Tory Burch, Jason Wu, Bottega Veneta, Anna Sui, Calvin Klein, JW Anderson, Simone Rocha, Burberry, Off-White, Ellery, Jil Sander, Giambattista Valli, Proenza Schouler, and Versace.

She was chosen to be one of fifteen women to feature on the cover of the September 2019 edition of British Vogue, which was picked by Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, who was the guest editor for that issue. At the British Fashion Awards, which took place in London on December 2, 2019, she was named the winner of the ‘Model of the Year’ award. The story of Adut Akech Bior started amid the civil war in Sudan, where she was born and raised until her family moved to Australia.

She was just 11 when she first became interested in modeling, but she quickly decided that she wanted to make a career out of it. Adut’s uncommon appearance, a blend of her African and Australian ancestry, sets her apart from other individuals in the fashion industry. Adut revealed the following in an interview with L’Officiel: “Despite being favored by designers, Akech’s earlier years in Australia as a Sudanese refugee were tainted by individuals satirizing her bodily formation, including her skin tone and the cleft in her teeth.” Akech spent her early years in Australia as a refugee from Sudan.

Despite this, throughout the different casting calls, they are the distinctive characteristics that set Adut apart from the other models. She did it on the runways of various European nations and the United States when she made her debut. This was the beginning of her ascent to worldwide stardom. While she was participating in one of these fashion performances, Pierpaolo Piccioli, the creative director of Valentino, took note of her. Piccioli was confident that he had found someone exceptional and a genuine treasure for his brand after evaluating her innate talent and her fundamental good looks.

She walked the runway for well-known fashion designers and graced the covers of notable glossy magazines. Black and white, the iconic colors of both Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld, were probably one of the most prominent themes at the Met Gala 2023. Supermodel Adut Akech, a muse of Lagerfeld, made history as the second Black Model to conclude a Chanel Haute Couture show as the show’s “bride” for the Fall 2018 Collection. She wore one of the most unforgettable dresses in said palette, and she did it while wearing the show’s “bride” gown.

On the other hand, at Monday night’s Met Gala, Akech donned a gown designed by another legendary fashion house, Carolina Herrera. The translucent black and white pleated tulle evening gown with hand-embroidered pearls and flowers was one of the evening’s standouts, even though it perfectly fits the night’s primary trend. The gown had hand-embroidered flowers and pearls. In the following, you will glimpse the evening’s events behind the scenes, courtesy of Carolina Herrera and Creative Director Wes Gordon.

Since then, her life has been a frenzy of magazine covers, international editorials, and exquisite street style. Please take a look at the outfit she was wearing as she walked out in Los Angeles on her way to the launch of an album.
