Ajay Piramal or Ajay Gopikrishna Piramal is a renowned Indian businessman and owner of the ‘Piramal Group,’ a textile-centric business. Apart from the Piramal Group, he has many other well-established companies, such as pharmaceuticals, real estate, and financial services, etc.
Ajay Piramal Biography:
Ajay Piramal was born on 3 August 1955 in the town of Bagar in the Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan. His upbringing is from Mumbai, Maharashtra.
Ajay’s family name was ‘Makhariya,’ but afterward, his father, Gopikrishna Piramal, used his grandfather’s name ‘Piramal’ as his surname, and then went on for generations to come.
Initially, his grandfather, Seth Piramal Chaturbhuj Makharia, had a cotton business, which later, in 1920, after becoming India’s oldest and first registered ‘Morarjee Mills’ cotton mill, developed the Piramal business empire.
During the 1920s, Seth Piramal Chaturbhuj became famous for his philanthropy work of Bagar’s development.
Ajay has already completed his B.Sc. (Hons.) from Jai Hind College, Mumbai, and Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai. He then went to the United States of America to do the Advanced Management Program (AMP) at Harvard Business School in Boston, USA. His ‘Piramal Group’ has four key companies: Piramal Glass, Piramal Realty, Piramal Enterprises Ltd and Piramal Foundation.
For his milestone entrepreneur efforts in the business sector, he received many rewards such as ‘CEO of the Year’ (1999) by World Strategy Forum, ‘Rotary International (District 3140) Certificate of Appreciation and ‘Four-Way Test Award’ (2001), ‘Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year’ (2004) in the Healthcare & Life Sciences category, ‘Global Leaders of Tomorrow’ (2004) by the World Economic Forum, Entrepreneur of the Year’ (2006) of UK Trade & Investment Council, ‘India Innovator of the Year’ (2008) by CNBC TV18, ‘Kriyasheel Global Achievers’ (2010), ‘Distinguished Family of the Year’ (2014) by Forbes Philanthropy, ‘Corporate Citizen of the Year’ (2016) by AIMA Managing India, and ‘Asia Business Leader of the Year’ (2017).
He also received a doctorate in philosophy (D. Phil) from Amity University in 2014.

He took over the responsibility of his father’s textile and cutting tools business at the age of 22. He used to run this business in partnership with his brothers Dilip and Ashok. But, after two years of his father’s death in 1979, his brother Dilip started ‘VIP Industries’ and ‘Blowplast,’ a separate business in 1982-83.
In 1984, when his second elder brother Ashok died of cancer, he was officially appointed of ‘Piramal Enterprises’ and chairman as well as managing director of ‘Morarjee Mills.’ He invested in the ‘Gujarat Glass industry in 1982 which proved to be cost-effective for him.
In 1988, he bought a pharmaceutical company, ‘Nicholas Laboratories,’ and transformed it into ‘Nicholas Piramal.’ He did not have much knowledge of the healthcare industries of that time, but with the cooperation of his workers and strategies such as overtime work, competitive prices, and indigenous drugs, his industry, within a short period of time, gave a strong competition to the pharmaceutical companies-GlaxoSmithKline and Pfizer.
In 1993, he bought the healthcare company ‘Roche Products for a total of 20 crores, separating pharmaceutical and real estate companies. In the same year, he also developed ‘Crossroads,’ one of India’s first shopping malls.
In 1996, after receiving a commission from the pharmaceutical company, ‘Boehringer Mannheim,’ he took over. In 1976, after his joint venture with ‘Reckitt & Colman,’ a consumer goods company, he set up a strong sales team.
He attained the company ‘Rhône-Poulenc’ in 2000 which was one of his largest acquisitions of the time.
He invested 180 crores in the commercial real estate investment company ‘The Glass Group,’ in 2005 which had a purchase price of 84 crores.
In 2009, he expanded his business by purchasing a pharmaceutical company in the interventional pain management category called ‘Minrad’ for a total of 188 crores. In the same year, a non-profit organization called the ‘Piramal Foundation’ was developed to provide education, health care, livelihoods, and youth empowerment to a minority group of Indians. The Foundation also received the ‘Corporate Trailblazer’ award by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, established by the India Today Group.
In 2010, he sold his domestic formulation business to Abbott Labs for $3.8 billion. In 2017, he began a housing finance business with Piramal Finance Limited (PFL).
