Ajinkya Madhukar Rahane (born June 6, 1988) is an Indian cricketer who has represented his country internationally. In Test cricket, he is now the Indian cricket team’s vice-captain. In Test cricket, he is primarily a middle-order batsman, while in white-ball cricket, he is a top-order batsman. In domestic cricket, he plays for Mumbai Indians, and in the IPL, he plays for Delhi Capitals.

Rahane made his first-class debut for Mumbai in the 2007–08 Ranji Trophy season. In August 2011, he made his international debut in a Twenty20 International against England in Manchester. Rahane made his Test debut in the Border–Gavaskar Trophy in March 2013. His first Test century came against New Zealand at Basin Reserve in Wellington. India won the Border–Gavaskar Trophy in Australia in 2020-21 under his captaincy. Rahane is ranked 15th in the ICC test player rankings as of May 9th, 2021, with a total of 688 points.
At the age of 19, Rahane made his first-class debut for Mumbai against Karachi Urban in the Mohammad Nissar Trophy in Karachi in September 2007, when most of Mumbai’s first-choice players were unavailable for various reasons. Sahil Kukreja opened the innings with a century on debut (207), with Kukreja scoring 110 for a total of 247. Following that, Rahane was selected for the Irani Trophy match against Rest of India.

In November 2011, Rahane was named to the Test squad to face the West Indies. Rahane was in the squad for 16 months and saw seven players make their debuts while he was there. During that time, his limited-overs cricket (ODI and T20I) performance was lacking, as he averaged about 25 in both ODI and T20I cricket, and battled for form in series against Pakistan and England (in January 2013).
Rahane made his Test debut on March 22, 2013, at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in Delhi, against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Rahane was given this opportunity by “sheer luck,” according to the media. Shikhar Dhawan, who had a dream start to his career in the third Test at Mohali, scoring 187 on debut, was the clear option for the Delhi Test until he injured his left hand’s knuckles. Due to jaundice, Gautam Gambhir, who was selected as a replacement for Dhawan, was unable to play. Rahane was given his India Test cap, ending a period in which Mumbai had failed to produce a Test player for India since May 2007. Many questioned Rahane’s ability to handle pressure and reproduce his home success at the international level after two single-digit scores in the game.

Despite his failure in his debut match, Rahane was named in India’s starting lineup for the opening match of their 2013–14 tour of South Africa. In the series, he batted in the bottom middle order and scored 209 runs at an average of 69.66 against a bowling attack that included Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel, and Vernon Philander (including a 96 off 157 balls at Kingsmead, Durban).

Due to an injury to Virat Kohli, Rahane became India’s 33rd Test Captain when he led the side in the fourth test against Australia in Dharamsala on March 25, 2017. As India’s Test captain, he scored 46 runs in his first innings and a fast 37 runs in his second. In August 2017, he hit a century in Sri Lanka. He performed terribly in the return series at home, scoring only 17 runs in five innings. He was not included in the playing 11 for the first and second Tests against South Africa in 2018, despite an overseas average of 55. Following his failures in both tests, Indian vice-captain Rohit Sharma was recalled for the third test, where his innings of 48 in the second innings on a dangerous batting pitch proved crucial in securing an Indian victory. Rahane scored two half centuries during India’s tour of England, including a match-winning 81 in the third test and 51 in the fourth. Rahane scored two half centuries during India’s subsequent tour of Australia, including a match-winning 70 in the Adelaide test and a 51 in the Perth test. Throughout total, he scored 217 runs in the series.

Rahane was a member of the Indian side that advanced to the World T20 final in 2014. After spending the first three games on the bench, he was given the opportunity to play against Australia and scored 19 runs. In the semi-final, he got India off to a fantastic start by hitting 32 runs, and India went on to win the match.

Rajasthan Royals selected Rahane in the 2012 Indian Premier League. Previously, he was a member of the Mumbai Indians’ squads but only saw minimal action. Then he grabbed the attention of Shane Watson of the Rajasthan Royals, who had seen him score an 80-ball century in the second innings of a three-day game against Australia A in 2010. Rahul Dravid and Watson persuaded Rahane to open the innings after buying him from the Mumbai Indians. “Being able to open the batting with Rahul bhai offered me the opportunity to express myself and show off everything I’d learned over the years,” Rahane remarked.

Rahane rose to prominence in 2012 after a fantastic century in the IPL. The years that followed aided him in his participation in international competitions. In 2018, he had a poorer IPL season than in 2017. His strike rate became a talking point, and he was quickly compared to Rahane. He is no longer eligible for international matches in limited formats. IPL 2019 was significant for Rahane since he played some vital innings for the club and also hammered a century against Delhi Capitals at SMS stadium in the 2019 season, becoming the highest run scorer for Rajasthan Royals (105*), his second century in the IPL. Rahane was traded from Rajasthan Royals to Delhi Capitals in November 2019 in preparation for the 2020 Indian Premier League. He has been re-signed by the franchise for the IPL-2021 season.
