Cox was designated one of the 11 “Heroes of Medicine” by TIME magazine in 1997 for his efforts in ethnobotanical medication discovery. He was named President of both the Society of Economic Botany and the International Society of Ethnopharmacology. He served as Director of the National Tropical Botanical Gardens in Hawaii and Florida for seven years.
